Mississippi judge jails attorney for not reciting pledge
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 06:29 PM by Tx4obama
Source: Associated Press (via HuffPo)

TUPELO, Miss. — A Mississippi judge ordered an attorney to spend several hours in jail Wednesday after the attorney chose not to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in court. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported that Chancery Judge Talmadge Littlejohn told a court audience to rise and say the pledge. People in the courtroom said Danny Lampley of Oxford stood but did not say the words.

Records show Lampley was booked into the Lee County jail at 9:40 a.m. and released about 2:30 p.m. on the judge's orders.

2. Is it ever permissible to tell a judge to go f*$k him/herself?
just wondering cause this judge needs to be told just that.

5. Reminds me of a joke...
After many of his motions were denied by the court the angered attorney spoke up, "Your Honor," he said, "what would you do if I called you an asshole?" The judge, now also angered, replied, "I would hold you in contempt of court and seek to have you suspended from practicing before this court again!" "What if I only thought it?" asked the attorney. "In that case, there is nothing I could do, you have the right to think whatever you want." "Oh, I see. Then, if it pleases the court, let the record reflect, that I 'think' you're an asshole."

to every lawyer in my family - many of whom I'm sure have wanted to call a judge an asshole.

"People in the courtroom?" Wow, talk about turning in one of your neighbors when "God and country" are "threatened!"

I can see it now: (pointing fingers) oooo...oooo...your Honor! Your Honor! He didn't say the pledge. That man! That man there! He didn't say the pledge...!!!

4. Nothing fascist about that!
Some people love the flag and some love the Bill of Rights.

There's no overlap between those groups.

7. What do you mean?
This is about a judge CLEARLY overstepping his powers apparently to make some political point.

9. Agreed. He overstepped.
Because he loved the flag (or at least the conformity it represents) and did not love free speech.

8. Time for this judge to say goodbye. If school kids can't be required
to say the pledge, what makes this judge think he can compel adults?

12. It's Mississippi...
I live here. The school superintendent ordered every school in the county to put a bible
verse on the wall of every classroom in the school. (2 years ago). The high school marching
band director makes everyone in the band and the audience say a prayer before every performance, and every
email I've ever gotten from him has a bible verse in it.
The Giddeons come into the kids' classrooms to hand out bibles every year.

Yes... public school.
