Panel: Transocean thwarts efforts to get documents
Source: Associated Press

METAIRIE, La. – Members of a federal panel investigating the cause of the Gulf of Mexico rig explosion and oil spill accused rig owner Transocean on Tuesday of thwarting their efforts to get to critical documents and a witness.

The co-chair of the panel, U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Hung Nguyen, told a crowded hearing room in a New Orleans suburb that members for two months have been trying to get Transocean to turn over materials related to its compliance with international safety management codes.

Nguyen said the panel, which is also looking for ways to improve safety and oversight, also has been unable to get a specific Transocean manager to testify about safety.

Transocean lawyers said the document request is too cumbersome and that whether the witness testifies isn't within their control.

1. Don't they have subpoena power?
sounds like it's time to stick some of these assholes in jail for awhile. That does wonders for improving memories of rich fatcats, especially if they're able to stick them into Angola for a couple of weeks.

2. The Justice Department should take this in hand.
Lives were lost. Criminal negligence may have been a factor. The US authorized the activities out there. The US Justice Department has the subpoena power and should be managing this. It should not be left to a mere commission that has no subpoena powers. Documents could be destroyed or lost as the Justice Department twiddles its thumbs.

4. This is a matter concerning the nation's safety
The bastards have nearly killed the Gulf of Mexico. They forfeited their rights. The public and out government have the right to know.

5. BP!
There you go! Now the thread will get some visibility and lots of loud
emotional replies rather than being allowed to sink quietly into obscurity!

There again ... maybe said vocal people like double standards ...?
