Singer Eddie Fisher dies in Berkeley

September 23, 2010 | 9:17 pm

Eddie Fisher, whose smooth voice helped him become one of the most popular singers in the nation in the 1950s and who was known for his highly publicized marriages and divorces to some of the most famous Hollywood starlets of the era, has died. He was in his 80s.

Fisher died Wednesday in Berkeley of complications from hip surgery, his daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher, told the Associated Press.

Between 1950 and 1956, Fisher recorded 25 songs that made the "Top 40," including 19 "Top 10" hits and four that reached No. 1.

Fisher's boyish good looks and natural charisma also helped him land roles on television shows and such feature films as "Butterfield 8," "Nothing Lasts Forever" and "Bundle of Joy."

Fisher had the hit version of "Heart" from 'Damn Yankees.'

1. RIP, sir... I imagine this will hit Elizabeth Taylor hard...
She is apparently in pretty bad health... How hard to get old...

19. Debbie always claimed that it was a "studio marriage" and that...
she wasn't upset with him going after Elizabeth Taylor
after Mike Todd died.

It was embarrassing for her to have to put up with
being the "victim" though, when she really couldn't
express her feelings.

21. Although she had two babies at home at the time
So that was kind of uncool -- I went to a Debbie Reynolds performance recently and she said, "for all you youngsters out there -- I was the Jennifer Aniston a long time ago!" LOL...

22. Ask Gwyneth Paltrow about that. She was engaged to Pitt before Anniston showed up.

I remember Gwen writing some article in "Marie Claire" mag about their break up pre-Jen.

24. In North Hollywood CA a couple of times a year
She plays the El Portal which is an old cinema turned into a small-ish venue, it's where she used to see movies as a kid as she's a Valley girl and grew up around here.

Basically they have a big screen in back of her showing career highlights and then she talks about them....does a few songs and dancesteps, she's very funny and entertaining.

The clip of her, Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor dancing up and down the stairs....BACKWARDS....got her a standing ovation from the crowd, it's actually really cool to be able to applaud somebody like that for something you've enjoyed watching all your life, I can't even count how many times I've seen Singin In The Rain!

My mom is her age and loves the show!

25. My impression of her is that she is so "without airs" ... and honest ....
that she really doesn't receive the recognition she should --

Didn't seem to be a place for her a la "Loretta Young" or "Jane Powell" to move

into -- female comedians don't seem to be that popular?

Will never forget seeing Singing In The Rain for the first time -- !!

She also seems to have inexhaustible energy --

I read her book -- sweetly sad -- and have to agree she has terrible taste in guys!!

Except -- Bob Wagner!!

26. She's unsinkable!
Carrie's book is funny too -- her mom was earthy and fun but also a movie star and eccentric a la Judy Garland, a very different kind of upbringing to be sure. You have to love Debbie and Carrie!

4. All her ex husbands are dying off
and I imagine a lot of her contemporaries in the business are, too. That's the hard part, outliving everyone you had a point of reference with.

7. Debbie Reynolds couldn't stand him!
Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 12:29 AM by K8-EEE
Recently I saw her perform (she was a bit looped!) at a little venue in her (and my!) home town No Hollywood CA and she said re: Eddie running out on her for Elizabeth Taylor (referring to her role in Cleopatra) "Eddie, he left -- he went up the Nile!"

ALL her husbands were dogs, that was her cross to bear, but Debbie is a movie star and still FABULOUS!

9. I still remember my mom reading us the article on Eddie leaving her.
We went to her little casino in Vegas years ago. It was nice and retro, black and white tile, but dead although that could have been the time of year.

12. My father never forgave him for leaving Debbie.
My own dad, who passed on recently, LOVED Debbie, and used to tell us how angry he'd been when he'd heard that Eddie left Debbie.

13. It didn't make it.
The hotel and casino, however popular with film fans, didn't fare so well financially. It went through several corporate restructurings, and millions were spent on renovations, but it continued to lose money. In 1997, the resort was forced to file for bankruptcy and the property was sadly turned over to the World Wrestling Federation, which won the hotel at auction for the shockingly low purchase price of $10 million - it was less than what was desperately needed to pay claims. Before the sale, Debbie had even been performing there for free. "They got a hell of a deal," Todd Fisher said afterwards. The doors closed and Debbie had to put the costumes and props into storage where they've been sitting since.

8. He was born in Philly of Jewish immigrant parents, dropped out of high school
to become a singer. He was drafted into the Army and served a year in Korea (as a singer with an Army band).

He recently turned 82.

Hope you had a good trip, Eddie - you had a great voice.

Quite a ways from Hollywood and not exactly a hangout for the stars.
