US Attorney General Returns to Work After Surgery
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) returned to work at the Justice Department (news - web sites) on Wednesday after missing nearly a month because of pancreatitis and surgery to remove his gallbladder, department officials said.

Ashcroft, 61, was admitted to a local hospital's intensive care unit on March 4 with a severe case of gallstone-caused pancreatitis. His gallbladder was removed on March 9.

Ashcroft issued a brief statement thanking the doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital and "everyone for the prayers and expressions of support for my family and me over the past few weeks."

1. I can just see a new pronouncement from Asscrack:
AG Order #3123343:
From this day forward, all nurses must wear burkhas.

He probably had complications with apoplexy when a nurse bent over to give him a shot and he saw cleavage.

4. He won't have to testify
His gallbladder was sacrificed to the Elder Gods to ensure that.

5. I can't believe the Democrats allowed him to be confirmed...
This was a serious mistake. Ashcroft could have been stopped. This neo-Confederate huckster should be back in Missouri.

8. Our best wishes for General Ashcroft's continued good health
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 01:27 PM by orthogonal
In the spirit of civility and loyal opposition, let me say that I empathized with the Attorney General's suffering and I wish him continued good health. While I disagree with his policies, I wish him no personal ill-will.

In the sprit of the loyal opposition, let me also hope that General Ashcroft's illness has had a silver lining. Just as Ashcroft believes that Christ suffered on the cross for his sins and Job suffered in order to win God's bet with the Devil, I think one can hope that General Ashcroft will see his own suffering as a gift that will give him a greater insight into the suffering of others.

In particular, perhaps the Attorney General will now be able better to empathize with the terminally-ill cancer patients, the sufferers with chronic glaucoma, and those slowly dying of AIDS, all of whom, despite having the right under California law to use marijuana to alleviate their pain and encourage their failing appetites, are routinely harassed by General Ashcroft's Justice Department.
