Jewish leaders express disgust over David Irving's visit to Poland
Source: Associated Press

Polish Jewish leaders expressed disgust on Wednesday over a visit to Poland by British writer and convicted Holocaust denier David Irving, and an anti-racist group called for legal action against him.

Irving, 72, is the author of several books which defend Adolf Hitler and deny that the Nazis murdered six million Jews during World War II. He has begun an 8-day study tour of wartime sites in Poland with a group of followers.

Poland was home to one of the world's largest Jewish communities before 1939. The vast majority were killed by the Nazis, many in death camps such as Treblinka which Irving said he plans to visit.

---snip---

"We are not going to Auschwitz this time because I believe it is overrated," Irving said in a short interview.

"The Jews tried to turn Auschwitz and their tragedy into a money-making machine and they persecute historians who ask legitimate questions about what actually happened there."

1. Sickening
That survivors have to listen to people like him makes me want to vomit. That he said Auschwitz "was a "Disney-style tourist attraction" makes me want to punch something. Is the madman from iran part of this tour?

2. Glad to see the museum told him to stay away
He makes me a bit ashamed to be British. Best thing would be for him to drop dead, soon, preferably in an embarrassing manner.

4. At least in Britain it's legal to call him a liar
After his loss in the libel suit. He's a pretty shitty guy -- distorting history in any way is bad enough -- but to do so regarding the holocaust is even worse.

6. One doesn't have to be Jewish to be disgusted with this despicable man
Even though assholes like this actually help spread the Holocaust history for a new generation. There are too many people who don't know about it.

10.  Irving is a very sick man
but having said that, the Israeli government continue to treat the Palestinians as the Jews were treated in Poland. The good will that was built up because of the evil treatments of the Jews is waning because of the treatment of the Palestinians.

17. I am sorry if you feel
I took a cheap shot at the Israelis, but facts are facts and to pretend other wise is not doing anyone a service.I feel the Jews have a right to exist but the Palestinian also have rights and to deny that is wrong.

in any way denying that the Palestinians have rights?

14. Not relevant
This concerns a British RW nutcase visiting a country where RW antisemitism is still prevalent, and minimizing a terrible crime committed against Europaean Jews before Israel ever existed.

Neither Irving nor those in charge of Poland have anything to do with either Israel or Palestine (and I doubt that the Polish right are any more keen on Muslims than on Jews). Current Europaean Jews are not responsible for the Israeli government; and the Holocaust victims most certainly were not.

18.  Are you implying
there is no connection between the behavior of the Germans and their treatment of the Jews and the treatment of the Palestinian by the Israeli Jews,if that's your point I dare say you are wrong, two evils never make a right.

20. I don't see any particular connection
Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 06:40 AM by LeftishBrit
Humans in general often show nationalistic prejudices, and ill-treat minority groups to varying degrees. E.g. Jim Crow in America and anti-immigrant bigotry in modern Europe including the UK.

However, none of these things CAUSE the others.

'Two evils never make a right.'

Who said they did?

Are you implying that Polish antisemites, or David Irving, are mainly motivated by concern over the Palestinians? Definitely not. I can assure you that the Polish Right hate Muslims just as much as Jews; and the British Far Right generally even more so!

13. He's a disgusting man
What is most shocking is perhaps not that he as an individual holds his views but that Poland is letting him visit their country for this nasty purpose.

Surveys suggest that antisemitism is more prevalent in Poland than in most countries in Europe at present.

Organization hopes to convict British Holocaust denier for “minimizing” the scale of Nazi atrocities.
LONDON – A Polish organization began legal action this week to convict British Holocaust denier David Irving for “minimizing” the scale of Nazi atrocities, as the revisionist historian begins his controversial tours of the Nazi death camps in the country. The Open Republic Association Against Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia lodged a complaint with the Institute of National Remembrance- Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation (IPN) on Wednesday claiming Irving seeks to “minimize” the scale of Nazi crimes as well as deny the extermination program in his book Hitler’s War, which was recently published in Polish ...
