Alan Greenspan heart attack rumor makes dollar tumble
Fed: Won't Comment on Greenspan Rumor
14 minutes ago Add Business - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve (news - web sites) on Wednesday declined to comment on a market rumor that Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan (news - web sites) had had a mild heart attack.

"The Fed does not comment on market rumors," Fed spokesman Andrew Williams said.

The rumor about the central bank chief led to a decline in the value of the dollar against the euro.

1. Dollar Daze
If this is true, I'm sorry to hear that he is suffering. But the notion that the dollar is being "protected" by Sir Alan or anyone else at the Fed is laughable. This is a dollar demolition crew, all for the grail of four more years of tyranny.

3. Barring some incredible breakthrough in interferon research...
Greenspan will die. Shouldn't there be a #2 person who can take over without a global economic panic when Greenspan dies?

7. Well
Part of Greenspan's problem is that he cares far too much about inflation. A little inflation is tolerable, so long as it comes along with growth.

8. Uhm, not lately
He blessed the massive tax cuts and whines quietly about the deficits.

Those two things are recipes for unchecked inflation. When inflation is out of control, we have serious problems. It's coming. The cake is in the oven.

15. I agree that the deficits
(and therefore the tax cuts) are hurting the economy, but I don't think there's any evidence that they're causing inflation. What they are doing is forcing the dollar down (a bad thing), crowding out private-sector investment (a bad thing), and allowing crucial government fuctions (healthcare, pensions, infrastructure) to be largely unmet.

11. Be different from the RW --stop attacking Greenspan
The right wing repeated over and over in the 90's that Greenspan was the reason for the economic turnaround it just couldn't have been Clinton or the TEAM of economists he had in his administration.

As soon as the economy turned a bit sour they started blaming Greenspan.

Give the guy a break-as O'Neill's book (you should read it) said Greeenspan is about as non partisan as you can get. He IS a devotee of Ayn Rand (having met her) but in the large scope, which is what he deals in, he reports and decides based on the overall condition and necessary steps for the economy.

I have nothing against him. He has done this country very well and I hope (as anyone should with anyone else) the best health.

12. Anybody that tells people
to go out and get an ARM when rates have no where to go but up is crazy. Two years now all we hear is jobs are around the corner. Notice the Chicago purchasing index out today? Employment component dropped under 50%. that means as great as Greenspan tells us it is, there are no jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13. I agree with UP re AG's health..,.
But agree with you that Greenspan drank the kool-ade when he supported the BushCo tax cuts. You're also right that if anyone is stupid enough to follow his advice re ARMs... well, they'll find out.

18. Devotee of Ayn Rand - that's bad.
Ayn Rand was completely whacko. Did you ever read "Atlas Shrugged"? She essentially put forth the proposition that corporate income taxes were theft by the government - but cheating and stealing by corporate tycoons was ok. Plus she was just a really bad writer.

I just wanted to make everyone aware that he is a Rand-ian (if that is the right term).

It's A theory of economy and so forth but I don't think he is defined or tied to it exclusively.

The clown's arsenal consists solely of lowering interest rates, and giving oblique projections and advice, not like a fortune teller.

Who the fuck needs a "Czar" to do that. He is a complete bullshitter who couldn't change the tire on his car.
