Supreme Court won't stop execution of Virginia woman
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a stay of execution appeal from Teresa Lewis, scheduled to be the first woman executed in the United States in five years.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell previously rejected a clemency request from the death row inmate, who is set to die by injection Thursday evening.

Lewis, a 41-year-old grandmother, pleaded guilty to her part in the 2002 slayings of her husband and stepson in their rural home near Danville, Virginia, about 145 miles from Richmond. Two male co-conspirators -- the triggermen -- were given life in prison without parole.

1. In this case, killing this woman serves no purpose.
Will it give the family of the victims some peace-perhaps if this is what they think is right, but then men who actually carried out the murders are going to remain in prison the rest of their lives.
Personally, I think the only one who truly benefits from this-or so he thinks is macho man Bob McDonnell. I despise these politicians who can so easily disregard someone else's life for political points.

13. I disagree--killing her serves a purpose. Many dark purposes.

Truthfully, while McConnell is an asshole, no Dem. governor would have shown leniency, either....not when you murder a soldier for the money....not in VA.

3. Isn't this woman mentally challenged?
She was tricked into I thought by the 2 guys who are serving life. This is wrong.

4. They all should serve equally. Death for all or life for all.

9. There are degrees of guilt in most cases.
The sentences should reflect those degrees, IMO.

10. Only the USA, Iran and a few other backward nations have state-sanctioned murder
State-sanctioned killing is NOT an option allowed in most nations of the world.

14. The triggerman got life and she gets death?
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 09:29 AM by rocktivity
I don't see a degree of guilt that merits the triggermen being punished so much less severely.

15. They do - the guys she hired to commit the murder
would not have committed that specific murder had she not hired them to do so. She bears the majority of the guilt for causing a murder to happen that otherwise would not have. While I am no fan of state-sanctioned killing, it is illogical to posit that she bears less guilt than the hit men she hired.

12. The "mentally challenged" defense is a hard sell, here...
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 09:11 AM by msanthrope
She scored a 70 and 73 on two tests after being caught....

Now, the prosecuting attorney has made the point that this wasn't the first death plot against her husband she was involved in, nor did the defense present anyone who knows her IRL who would think she was mentally challenged. It's a put on according to the state...and so far, that seems to be what the jury and judges have thought, too.
