Blown-out BP well finally killed at bottom of Gulf

Source: Associated Press

BP's blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has finally been killed once and for all, five months after an explosion sank a drilling rig and led to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the federal government's point man on the disaster, said Sunday BP's well "is effectively dead."

Crews pumped in cement on Friday to plug BP's well nearly 2.5 miles below the sea floor. The cement had hardened by Saturday, and a pressure test conducted confirmed that the plug would hold.

The gusher was contained in mid-July after a temporary cap was successfully fitted atop the well. Mud and cement were later pushed down through the top of the well, allowing the cap to be removed.

1. Well, I'm glad that's over.
Now, when oil reaches $800 per barrel the Macondo prospect will become economical again.

3. In other news, Reservoir in Gulf May Still Be Used
While BP plans to permanently abandon its stricken well in the Gulf of Mexico, with little but a plug left at the top, it may yet make use of the reservoir of oil and gas that the well tapped into.

Experts say that there are no technical or commercial reasons why BP — or another company if BP is wary of the political or public-relations repercussions — could not eventually produce oil from the formation, which BP once estimated contained about 50 million barrels of oil. The well spewed only about one-tenth of that amount, according to government estimates.

4. In the early days of this event

the other oil producers, particularly Saudi, were watching with interest to see what future events would hold. Basicly , given that the field just happens to be one of the largest yet to be discovered on the planet, if you don't use what you've got then you don't really need their oil - its a scarce resource.

6. Thank you
It is far from over with all this oil and Cortex sitting on the sea floor. Unfortunately, we, and the marine life, will feel the effects of this for generations.
