U.S. troops in Afghanistan may get back their fast food
Source: CNN

U.S. troops in Afghanistan may soon get their burgers back.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Hill, who took over as the senior non-commissioned officer in Afghanistan this month, told Stars and Stripes on Thursday that he was reversing a ban on fast food concessions such as Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken that had been instituted earlier this year.

“For troops to be able to go and grab a burger or a piece of chicken or whatever, I don’t really think it’s that bad,” Hill told Stars and Stripes.

The concessions ban had been put in place by Gen. Stanley McChrystal in February as the military was boosting its troop strength in Afghanistan. McChrystal said the concessions took up space on bases and in supply line.

I thought at the time that was a stupid decision by McChrystal.

BTW there was an article earlier this week that the concessions owned by foreign companies were allowed to stay. There was a story about a TGIF owned by a foreign company at Bagram.

Seriously!

That monthly trip to McDonalds may have been what kept me sane in the Peace Corps for two years

6. Tsk, tsk
They must not have been that 'uncivilized' where you were if they had a MickeyD's. Two years without American fast food sounds like paradise.

7. Yeah yeah yeah
It was Thailand. Yes the local food was excellent. I never had a bad meal.

But sometimes, you just want that "...two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun" thing.

The last time I ate at McDonald's was 1975. There were coupons in the college newspaper. :puke:

12. +1
Not in the peace corp, but when I was in Singapore and India, it was always nice to hit up a MickeyD and get a nice chicken sandwich.

4. They got short order lines
in dining facilities over there that a lot of troops go through. They pretty much serve the same thing. Burgers and fries.

10. Good news for the contractors who make their money trucking this stuff in from Pakistan
The bigger the logistical train, the more you have to pay people to move it.
