Taliban Calls on Afghans to Avenge Quran Burning

September 9, 2010 5:38 PM -

The Taliban in Afghanistan has distributed handwritten leaflets south of Kabul telling Muslim clerics about a Florida minister's now-canceled plans to burn copies of the Quran Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Although the Rev. Terry Jones announced Thursday that he has canceled his controversial plans to burn copies of the Muslim holy book, the Taliban has already used the minister's protest to advance its cause.

CBS News has obtained some of the leaflets. They were distributed on the backs of motorcycles to small villages in Paktia province, in the southeast part of the country, CBS News Correspondent Mandy Clark reports.

The leaflets include a call to avenge any burning of the Quran.

"To defend blessed Quran and righteous Islam and your religion, join our track and go for taking revenge of the holy Koran," the leaflets read in part. Because many villagers cannot read, the leaflets were given to imams, who were instructed to pass the message on to villagers, even during their daily prayers.

1. how predictable
The Taliban fundies over there, and the religious fundies over here, feed off each other, fanning each others flames.

4. I bet the families of kids that get killed over this won't think it's a joke..
But you can go ahead and laugh all you want.

And was Baghdad Bob any more pathetic than Donald "East South North and West of there" Rumsfeld?

7. Well
my son is a Marine and I believe this will make absolutely no difference. You do understand we are currently engaged against the Taliban, no? You do realize we have been for 9 years, no? What are they going to do any different than they already are? A. Nothing.

Can you not read? or Do you not understand English? There is nobody laughing and you are despicable for accusing me of laughing about any of this.

9. You were the one who talked about it being a joke..
And all it's going to take is to motivate one more suicide bomber for this Koran burning to end up with a net loss of lives.

I'm sorry your son is there, I didn't want anyone's sons there in the very first place, unlike most Americans I thought from the very beginning that invading Afghanistan was a terrible idea.

For what it's worth both I and my son in law are former Marines, he was gung ho for invasion nine years ago, now he won't even talk about what's going on.
