Siegelman asks appeals court to dismiss charges

By SCOTT BROWN
Published: August 31, 2010

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Attorneys for former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman have asked a federal appeals court to dismiss all charges against him in a federal government corruption case.

Siegelman's attorneys filed briefs Tuesday with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals asking them to throw out the charges because of a recent Supreme Court ruling that raised questions concerning a white collar crime law that was the basis of most of the charges.

Siegelman and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy were convicted in 2006 of bribery and other charges in a government corruption case.

The 11th Circuit earlier upheld most of the charges against Siegelman and all of those against Scrushy, but the Supreme Court sent the cases back to the 11th Circuit after its ruling concerning the white collar crime law.

2. What has happened to Siegelman is a travesty of justice.
I really was hoping that when Democrats took control of Congress we have hearings and investigations of the many crimes that were committed by people like Karl Rove. Instead all the hearings that were ongoing before the election, seem to have stopped.

Did Karl Rove ever answer those subpoenas eg? What happened to Leahy's torture committee, and Conyers' and Waxman's etc.?

Siegelman should not just have these charges thrown out, there should be an investigation started by the DOJ to find out what role Karl Rove and his cohorts played in the wrongful prosecution of Siegelman.

And it's also a shame that the 'left' seems to have abandoned Siegelman. I guess it was just politics rather than a sincere interest in justice when this was a big story for the left. So disappointing. All of it, and I can only imagine how he must feel.

4. That is so sad. And Rove and Cheney live in luxury.
This was one man who was worth starting a movement for. I remember him while he was still in office, speaking out about election fraud. It took courage for him to do that at the time. And I believe that is one of the reasons they went after him.

And while he served a purpose for the left, he was a hero. The criminals win again.

9. N o joke
Even if the political guts were not there for followup, the president should at the very least have issued pardons to free him from this political muck so he could try to live his life.
