Afghanistan says finds 1.8 billion barrel oilfield

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan said on Sunday it had discovered an oilfield with an estimated 1.8 billion barrels in the north of the war-ravaged country, where U.S. and other foreign forces are trying to tame a Taliban-led insurgency.

The discovery of the basin between northern Balkh and Shiberghan provinces was made after a survey conducted by Afghan and international geologists, said Jawad Omar, a spokesman for the ministry of mines.

"I do not know its price in the market. But the initial survey says there are 1.8 billion barrels of oil and I think there will be more than what it is estimated," he told Reuters.

Various estimates of Afghanistan's hidden wealth have been made in recent years, but the challenge of exploiting the resources in a country at war and with little mining infrastructure is daunting for most investors.

The record of a lot of countries has not been good... Nigeria, Venezuela, etc.

Norway, of the countries recently discovering oil, has been able to keep its democracy, though.

Problerly becouse we had a stable democracy, who had been around for more than a couple of houndred year before we discovered oil in the North Sea at all. And we had/have a few other things too before we got the jackpot...

And, maybe more important, we had politicans, and an educated people who was looking little more forward than the nose, and therefore used the oil wealth to build up a country who today is one of the best country to live in, in 6 year in row now, Scandinavia have been on the top ten list over best parts of the world to live in...

18. Canada, UK and Australia seem to have done not too badly. Even the US still has democracy of a sort.
Despite being a major oil producer.

20. Was it because they nationalized the oil?
Or did they do that in the other places, too?

21. they aren't in control of their own country, and I doubt their overlords will let them control their
own resources.

this is more of a curse than a blessing as many other poor countries have found out, the strong will exploit and take at gun point what they require.

10. About a half a year supply for the USA..
What a drop in the bucket in the world of oil fields. I guess when you throw around the number "billions" most people are impressed.
