Narco-blogger beats Mexico drug war news blackout
Source: AP

MEXICO CITY - An anonymous, twentysomething blogger is giving Mexicans what they can't get elsewhere — an inside view of their country's raging drug war.

Operating from behind a thick curtain of computer security, Blog del Narco in less than six months has become Mexico's go-to Internet site at a time when mainstream media are feeling pressure and threats to stay away from the story.

Many postings, including warnings and a beheading, appear to come directly from drug traffickers. Others depict crime scenes accessible only to military or police.

The undifferentiated content suggests that all sides are using the blog — drug gangs to project their power, law enforcement to show that it too can play rough, and the public to learn about incidents that the mainstream media are forced to ignore or play down.

1. This is fascinating - I read the account on MSNBC.com.
The people of Mexico deserve to know the extent of this nightmare and as usual, the government wasn't totally forthcoming.

And it gives one hope that the voices of we the people CAN'T be stifled. The power of the internet is a great tool.

2. The people of Mexico do know. It's the Americans
who need to know about all of this.

3. Im very suspicious of this so called drug war in Mexico.
Since the contested presidentual election, people have been murdered....not just drug lords, but citizens with no apparent connection to the drug trafficking. I fear that this whole thing may be more politically motivated and that the drug war is a convenient cover for eliminating opposition. We have seen the same in Columbia and in the constant and convenient confusion between the term terrorist and drug trafficker.
Drugs are everywhere and no doubt they contribute to nefarious political activity, but why is this all happening now when a the new president, Calderon, is so cozy with the USA? There is certainly no lack of examples of the USA using the War on Drugs to undermine democratic/leftist opposition movements that it believes threatens it's powerful interests all over Latin america.
Just saying...I am suspicious.....

4. Cite an example or two???
I've not read about your point ANYWHERE. It could be...but I'd like more than someone making a claim with nothing to back it up. Rumors run rampant...and the last thing Mexico needs right now are rumors as poisonous as yours.

6. Keep reading...it's out there.
I wish I could sight a link but I can't remember which of the many sources that I read each day contained it.
All I am saying is that we should believe nothing but consider all possibilities. Don't we know enough history to be suspicious of drug warriors and their ties to US foreign policy agendas?
Also, there are Mexican citizens who still believe that Calderon stole the election.....that isnt a rumour.
