Vitter: GOP candidate is a ploy

BATON ROUGE — Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter is accusing Democrats of bankrolling a GOP opponent to Vitter in the U.S. Senate race.

The last-minute entrance of former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor was a surprise challenge to Vitter in the Aug. 28 primary, and Vitter's campaign claimed Friday that Traylor's candidacy is a ploy by Vitter's Democratic opponent Charlie Melancon.

With reports that Traylor will begin his radio and TV ads next week, Vitter's campaign sent out a fundraising e-mail that calls Traylor a "tool and stalking horse for Charlie Melancon." The e-mail never mentions Traylor by name, instead calling him Vitter's "so-called Republican opponent."
