IRS to stay at new Austin site after plane crash
Source: AP

An Internal Revenue Service office will not return to the Texas building where a tax protester killed himself by crashing his plane into the structure.

IRS spokeswoman Lea Crusberg said Thursday that the agency has signed a two-year lease on another office space in Austin. She declined to identify the location.

Andrew Joseph Stack III on Feb. 18 flew his single-engine plane into the four-story structure. IRS worker Vernon Hunter also was killed. About 200 IRS employees worked in the building at that time.

Remember this story? I almost didn't. The story about a terrorist who crashed a plane into a government building in Texas. The story was buried after a day or two when it was discovered the terrorist was a home grown right wing conservative crazy person.

Nothing to see here.

1. I remember it. I see the building every day.
Vernon Hunter was known to a few of my friends, though none closely.

The story didn't vanish that quickly. They talked about it for weeks in Austin, and I know it was a national story because I remember discussions weeks later around here about various lawsuits.

It did not, however, lead to any wars, any new civil rights-abusing legislation, or any significant consequences. If the pilot had been Muslim (he was an atheist or agnostic, IIRC), there would have been significant changes in our way of life over it.
