Al-Qaeda in Pakistan is top threat, says US report
Source: BBC News

Al-Qaeda's leadership in Pakistan and its affiliates in Africa remain the biggest threats to US and its interests abroad, a US government report says.

The annual terrorism report states that al-Qaeda encountered setbacks in 2009 but has proved to be "resilient and adaptable".

Iran was said to be the most active "state sponsor" of terrorism, as with previous years.

>

The report identified Pakistan and Yemen as of particular risk and said al-Qaeda had been able to create proxy groups, and managed to recruit citizens in the US and Europe, for attacks across the world.

1. Actually, the US in Pakistan is the top threat
it's just hard for them to see with their death goggles on.

2. Pakistan itself is a major threat
if we keep aiding, arming and cajoling the military leaders and ISI there, turning a blind eye towards Pakistan's export and use of terrorism as state policy.

6. So? Many countries have natural calamities
and Pakistan has a big standing army plus lots of money from faux sentry duty for the US ... where is the problem exactly where I should cry a river for Pakistan in preference to all the other people who are dying around the world from natural disasters?

Besides, the people dying the flood are only a fraction of what Pakistan's official state sponsored terrorists kill in a year.

Peace

PS -- Is there any specific reason you're so pro-Pakistan and anti-India? It is not readily apparent.

11. Where exactly did I say I was unsympathetic?
Please read my post carefully. I only said Pakistan is well-equipped to handle this disaster and that this particular calamity should not be held higher than all the other calamities in the world. Moreover, places like Haiti deserve more sympathy because they lack the standing military infrastructure that Pakistan has to help the victims.

I am not "against Pakistan" but against the terrorist mentality in Pakistan which drives that nation. If you are unsure, do a google search on "Pakistani terrorism" or "Pakistani terrorist apparatus" and enjoy :)

By the way, my views are shared by two prominent Pakistani columnists Ayaz Amir and Irfan Hussain of Dawn. Perhaps you should read their writings about how the focus on terrorism by the military and ISI has made Pakistan a basket case.

12. My post (post #4) was very simplistic:
Maybe I'll re-word it for you:

How does this make you feel?

I really don't care that you share the views of any columnists and I don't care to read their writings.

15. You asked for my "thoughts" and now you are asking for "feelings!!"
hahahahahaha

Is there anyone alive who likes the suffering of masses? I wish there were no floods in Pakistan and I wish those people were not in dire straits. It is a tragedy and my heart goes out to them ... just as it did for victims of Katrina, the tsunami, the Haitian earthquake or the California fires. I don't see your point really other than to provoke and/or change the logical discussion to something touchy feely.

Notwithstanding the above, we will all witness aid sent for those people to be diverted to Pakistani military to buy more weapons. It happened after the Kashmir earthquake and it will happen again.

16. FINALLY.....A straight answer!
"I wish there were no floods in Pakistan and I wish those people were not in dire straits."

That's all that I wanted to know, nothing about weapons.

Thanks for the straight answer! :)

9. Ah, your true colors...
You preach that you harbor no hatred towards the people of Pakistan, but justify innocent deaths as a punishment for others that are corrupt. I'll add this post to your list as well.

10. I didn't justify innocent deaths ... I only compared
the deaths in Pakistan with many other countries and said there is no reason to value Pakistani deaths higher than the ones in Indonesia or Laos or Philippines or Guatemala or Louisiana ... that's all.

Please parse my words carefully instead of jumping to conclusions emotionally.

13. You are full of shit
Besides, the people dying the flood are only a fraction of what Pakistan's official state sponsored terrorists kill in a year.

If I wrote this sentence about a disaster in India and compared the death-toll to the score of baby girls killed by the parents in the lower casts of India per year, you'd call me a racist, a bigot and a xenophobe, lacking any trace of compassion.

You did not compare the death-tolls of Pakistan to the losses tallied by other countries' natural disasters (read your quote above); Your metaphor is no different than the Haiti victim count being compared to the number of Haitians that deal drugs in Florida- and then saying, "I don't feel bad, and not going to shed a single tear, because they are all drug dealers anyways."

So don't sit there preaching to me about how I cannot grasp the concepts of your ill conceived post s- write better or go visit an anger management professional. It is quite evident how you feel in every one of your dogmatic hate posts.

Here's a homework assignment for you... search on your name + Pakistan in latest breaking news, and behold the vileness. :puke:

17. Here is a better assignment ....
Read your posts juxtaposed with mine and see who needs anger management.

Nevertheless, I do see your point in my comparing terrorist deaths with flood deaths and I agree with you. May all victims be safe and recover.

18. Thanks for admitting the offensiveness of your statement
I fulfilled the requested assignment... My stance remains consistent with my original stance. The major difference is that I have an issue with an individual's misdirected attitude, whereas you seem to have hatred issues with an entire country.

And here I was under the impression that you were so arrogant, self-centered and blinded by hatred, that you could never see how inappropriate your posts present themselves... thanks for proving me wrong and finally seeing why I have issues with they way you word your thoughts! :)

20. You misconstrue my posts and it must be a cultural thing
Disliking Pakistan the state/government/military is not equal to harboring hatred for the entire country.

Some examples:

Disliking Israeli policies is NOT antisemitism.

Opposing American military actions is NOT unpatriotic.

If you see my posts through the same glasses as neocons, you'll have the same reactions they do.

14. The report says
that the failed 25 December bombing - in which a Nigerian influenced by a radical Yemeni cleric attempted to blow up a plane heading for Detroit - underscored the threat posed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Pensinsula (AQAB).

Because a single alleged bombing by "Al-Qaeda" is more frightening to Arabs than the utter destruction of a neighboring country, on a pretext and a whim, by the U.S. Government?

That's some fucked-up logic, there. The stench of state propaganda is unmistakable.

19. Al-Qaeda in (fill-in the blank) is top threat, says US report.

Obama secretly deploys US special forces to 75 countries across world

Tim Reid and Michael Evans, Washington

President Obama has secretly sanctioned a huge increase in the number of US special forces carrying out search-and-destroy missions against al-Qaeda around the world, with American troops now operating in 75 countries.

The dramatic expansion in the use of special forces, which in their global span go far beyond the covert missions authorised by George W. Bush, reflects how aggressively the President is pursuing al-Qaeda behind his public rhetoric of global engagement and diplomacy.

When Mr Obama took office US special forces were operating in fewer than 60 countries. In the past 18 months he has ordered a big expansion in Yemen and the Horn of Africa — known areas of strong al-Qaeda activity — and elsewhere in the Middle East, central Asia and Africa.

According to The Washington Post, Mr Obama has also approved pre-emptive special forces strikes to disrupt terror plots, and has given the units powers and authority that was not granted by Mr Bush when he occupied the White House.

It also emerged yesterday that Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary, has ordered the Pentagon to find savings of more than $100 billion (£68 billion) over the next five years to redistribute more funds for combat forces — including special operations units. Mr Gates has called on all departments to come up with proposals by July 31, and is initially demanding $7 billion in cuts and efficiencies for the 2012 fiscal year, and further cuts each year up to 2016.
