U.S. underemployment rate 18.4 percent in July, according to Gallup poll
Source: Michigan Live

The underemployment rate as measured by Gallup was 18.4 percent in July, up slightly from 18.3 percent in June. The results confirm that there was no real improvement in the U.S. job market last month.

The underemployment rate measures both Americans who are unemployed and those working part-time but wanting full-time work.

. . .

Americans aged 18 to 29 had the highest underemployment rate in July of any age group at 28.4 percent. Those without any college education had a 23 percent underemployment rate.

According to the report, fewer underemployed Americans are optimistic they will find work any time soon. Only 40 percent of the underemployed surveyed said that they are "hopeful' they'll find a job in the next month, down from 42 percent in June.

Almost thirty percent of twenty-somethings are not working or are working part time.

5. We are doing just A-OK in this country.
There aren't enough deck chairs on the Titanic to hold on to in the water. People are drowning financially with no end in sight.

The NYT had an article about a 49 year old woman who had been solidly middle class and was even working on her MBA when she lost her job. After more than a year of not finding a job she was homeless (staying in a motel thanks to a friend wiring her some money). The same day the NY Post had an article about the shrinking middle class. We are becoming a nation of a few "haves" vs. a majority of "have nots".

Damn depressing and scary........

:(
