Tom Brokaw will host (Calif.) gubernatorial debate
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Veteran NBC broadcaster Tom Brokaw, who covered Jerry Brown's first run for office 41 years ago as a young TV reporter in Los Angeles, will moderate the Oct. 12 gubernatorial debate between Brown and GOP nominee Meg Whitman at Dominican University in San Rafael, The Chronicle has learned.

The news that Brokaw will be the sole questioner comes amid complaints about Brown's dearth of policy proposals and Whitman's lack of accessibility to media. The billionaire former eBay CEO has been criticized for not appearing before newspaper editorial boards and for engaging in longer interviews with East Coast journalists who often are not as well-versed in state issues.

At the same time, Democrat Brown has been criticized for not offering many fully developed policy proposals, despite being on the campaign trail since March 2.

Brokaw, 70, who has moderated presidential debates since 1976, bristled at the suggestion that an out-of-state moderator would not be pressing the candidates hard enough to fully answer questions that mattered most to Californians - and not play to the national press corps.

... Brokaw will moderate the hourlong debate to be broadcast live at 6:30 p.m. on NBC affiliates throughout California. Given the hour and the number of stations that will carry it, it is likely to be one of the most widely seen of the three debates scheduled between Whitman and Brown.

Tom Brokaw will ask about; employment, Los Angeles, the San Andreas fault, legal lesbian love or "gal pals," silicon valley, budget shortfalls, parklands, wetlands, grasslands,
lush redwood forest that like the liquids from the fog clouds, public needs to local schools & colleges, agriculture, Del Norte county and the large size of the "Miller Compound."
