Senate jobs bill clears key hurdle
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies in the Senate earned a long-sought win Wednesday as a $26 billion measure to help states and local school boards with their severe budget problems cleared a GOP filibuster.

The bill advanced by a 61-38 tally that ensures the measure will pass the Senate on Wednesday or Thursday. It would then return to the House for a final vote that would deliver it to Obama for his signature.

Moderate Maine Republicans Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins cast the key votes to break the GOP filibuster.

The bill would extend programs enacted in last year's stimulus law to help preserve the jobs of tens of thousands of teachers and other public employees.

4. GOP Filibusters school and state funding
What a shame that we have come to this - that we have to break a lock-step obstruction to help our children get a proper education and people keep jobs. Good for Olympia Snow and Susan Collins for doing what is right versus doing what the Party of No demands.

What in the world is wrong with our country? How can people align with what is clearly so detrimental to the sick, the poor, the young, the old?

8. If the Dems proposed a bill that said the sky is blue
it would have to pass a Repub filibuster. I miss the days when both parties could actually work together on important things. Those days are over from all appearances.
