DETROIT – Before a crowd of 300 cheering supporters at the Atheneum Hotel, Democratic gubernatorial primary winner Virg Bernero vowed to put Michigan on a path of productivity.

“The working people, we come to find out, are as angry as I am,” said Lansing's mayor, referring to the state’s rocky economy. “The people of Michigan want bold action, and they want it now.”

Bernero said state House Speaker Andy Dillon phoned him to concede shortly after 10 p.m. after election results showed Bernero had a decisive lead. The night capped a topsy turvy race in which Dillon had been ahead in many polls until recent weeks.

On Facebook, Andy Dillon thanked his supporters. . .

Rock and roll - Virg Bernero is a fighter. Got a lot of Alan Grayson in him on behalf of the average person.

Won't be a boring election, that's for sure.

2. Who's he up against?
Man, that is quite a change from the last Michigan governor, Granholm, who was really good looking.

4. I'll check with my right wing Brother in Law
in Detroit about Bernero's defects. I'll bet there's a bunch of 'em.

6. Sure, there are. He's better than Dillon, though.
Dillon's DLC, and Virg isn't.

9. That's the impression I got. He's repub lite
Got a call from my state reps wife last Friday night. she wanted me to work for Andy Dillon today. When I told her that I was voting for Verg Bernaro, she was really bummed so she had Andy call me. We talked for 10 minutes about his 4 step plan for the economy (jobs) and I was left with the feeling that he's just more repub lite.

11. He is and has been ever since he's been in the House, at least.
Too many at the top of MI Dem leadership are Blue Dogs or DLCers. It's hurt our state.

I'm hoping I can host a house party fundraiser for him and for Rep. Schauer this fall. These guys need money and boots on the ground.

8. I think Virg stands a better chance at beating Snyder than Dillon would have.
Although the Snyder win troubles me.
I would have preferred a Hoeskstra win.

GO VIRG!!

12. Hoekstra's a moron. Snyder ran a smart campaign.
He's definitely going to be trouble. There was an interesting article awhile back in our paper (he grew up here in the Creek) about how no one who went to school with him at Lakeview High School remembers him as a nerd. Given his ads at the time, it was funny.

18. Really?
I thought Hoekstra would their strongest candidate. Snyder will have the same problems DeVos had in 2006.

19. I thought Hoekstra would win their primary....
because of the support I saw for him in the rural areas.

His forceful pushing for drilling in the Great Lakes, would,
I think, have been FATAL for him.

21. All the Republicans had weaknesses
That's why I've always thought the Dems could win this race. I'm not sure why so many Democrats have bought into the idea that the Republicans are guaranteed to win the governorship.

In Hoekstra's case, I thought voting for NAFTA would be his biggest problem.

13. This is the troubling part
Total votes cast

Democrat= 527,202

Republican= 1,0144,523

It's going to be a challenge.

14. the Imbalance May Have Been Democrats Messing With Hoekstra
"On the Republican side, Hoekstra won in his Western Michigan base, but Snyder won nearly everywhere else, with Cox finishing behind him in their common base region of the Detroit metro area. It's unclear at this point if Snyder's late effort to encourage Democratic crossover votes was a major factor, but it's likely that he won a plurality of the Republican vote anyway. "

As long as they come home to vote for Governor Bernaro, we're all right.

that told me, OUT LOUD, that they were thinking
of voting for Snyder, and NOT just in the primary!

22. Happens a lot in primaries, unfortunately.
Every indication is that quite a few Democrats crossed over to vote for Snyder, which is why he won.

More voted the Republican ballot than the Democratic ballot in 2006, and look what happened.

24. The Republican primary was a LOT more contentious than ours.
5 interesting candidates (OK, 4...that Tom George guy was not very interesting).

Scandals, 4 or 5 "debates", a Congressman,
a nerd, an Attorney General and an Oakland
County Sheriff.

There was a lot of interest.

Our primary, not so much.

I talked to MANY folks who said that they would
seriously consider voting for Snyder if DILLON
got the nod.

Hopefully they will vote for a Democrat, since a
real one won the primary.

25. I hope so.
Thing is, right now people have only heard good things about Snyder. The MDP has, to their credit, come out swinging, seeking to paint him as just another rich CEO who has hurt families who wants to do more damage to our state.

People don't know much about what Snyder really represents - yet.

Virg is quite the fighter, and the more people know him, the more they like him.
