Mexican Drug Cartel Allegedly Puts a Price on Arizona Sheriff's Head
Source: myFOXPhoenix.com

On the day parts of Arizona's immigration law, SB 1070, went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news for another reason: there's a price on his head - allegedly offered by a Mexican drug cartel.

The audio message in Spanish is a bit garbled, but the text is clear.

"It's offering a million dollars for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's head and offering a thousand dollars for anyone who wants to join the Mexican cartel."

A man who wants to remain anonymous says his wife received the text message Tuesday evening. It also included an international phone number and instructions to pass the message along.

Lisa Allen of the Sheriff's office says they believe the message originated in Mexico.

Although the Sheriff has received numerous death threats in the past, they believe this threat is credible because of its timing.

43. Arpaio's office investigating alleged threat
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- The office of a controversial Arizona sheriff is investigating an alleged threat against the lawman it says came in the form of a text message from a throwaway cell phone in Mexico, a spokeswoman said Monday.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lisa Allen said that the FBI is assisting in the probe of the threat against Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

But FBI Special Agent Manuel Johnson, a spokesman for the bureau's Phoenix office, said that he knows of no FBI investigation, although, he said, they were aware of it. Johnson said the bureau would pitch in if Arpaio's office requested their assistance.

Allen said that the message, sent to a "text message tree," similar to a phone tree, offered $1 million to anyone who could kill Arpaio. But, she said, investigators "don't know how likely it is" they will be able to track down the sender.

All the shameless self-promotion in the world isn't going to help much.

It seems as if he was manufacturing trumped up charges of things like rape and pedophilia against his political enemies. One of his legal counsel henchmen is currently being disbarred and good ol' Sheriff Joe is going to find out what it's like on the other side of the bars.

47. The mexican cartels have legions of minions with no need to offer a big payoff for a hit.
The only reason a cartel would hit an American official is if that official was effectively shutting down their operations. Joe the douche-bag is too busy blowing himself to actually interdict drugs in his own jurisdiction let alone be effective fighting a foreign countries crime problem. This is pure self-serving bullshit.

51. The cartels aren't going to order a hit on any American official regardless
Even if that American official was actually shutting down their operation (which is a bit hard to imagine since CBP with legions of troops can't manage that), they wouldn't order a hit because killing an American official would bring a shitstorm response of epic proportions. So such a response would be extremely counterproductive to what they want to do. The cartels aren't stupid. You don't build a multi-billion dollar empire by doing stupid things.

48. This is a VERY fishy coincidence
On the same day this story breaks, Arpaio's political ally, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, issues a call for public donations to buy weapons for his officers, saying they're outgunned by the cartels: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8868360

Two outspoken, activist Arizona Sheriffs, both supporters of anti-immigrant legislation, publicize stories hyping the threat from Mexican drug cartels--on the same day? And the FBI is "aware" of the alleged "hit" on Arpaio--but is NOT investigating?

Something smells fishy about this "coincidence."
