Eljer plans 200 layoffs

FORD CITY -- About 200 of the more than 500 workers at Eljer's plumbing products plant were left wondering if they would still have a job after company officials informed them of plans for a major layoff yesterday.

With 54 workers already laid off, according to Duke Zellefrow, union president for Local 158 of the United Steelworkers of America, and adding 200 more planned, almost 50 percent of Eljer's workforce will be without jobs.

One young Eljer worker whose shift didn't start until the evening was in line at a local retail store when a co-worker gave him the bad news.
