NM man set on fire after losing drinking bet
Source: Associated Press

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A 47-year-old man's friends set his prosthetic leg on fire after he lost a drinking bet, causing him to suffer severe burns to his buttocks and lower back. Dona Ana County sheriff's deputies found the man naked on the side of U.S. Route 70 with his prosthetic leg in flames. Deputies learned that the man and his friends were drinking Monday and bet that whoever drank the least would be set on fire.

The man told investigators that at six beers, he drank the least, and agreed to let his friends set him on fire. He said his friends ignited his prosthetic leg, and the flames spread to his body.

The sheriff's office said the man took his clothes off because of the pain and his friends decided to take him to the hospital. But they got nervous and instead dropped him off on the side of the highway.

The man was taken to a Texas burn treatment center.

With all the grim headlines lately it's sure nice to know good "friends" are still out there getting together who really know how to have a little fun.

14. That part of the state is New Texico.
However, the whole state has world class drunks. I moved out here from Boston, where the gutters outside bars run with piss and vomit every weekend, but I've never seen drunks like the drunks out here.

Trust me, this kind of thing is NOT unusual. It just seldom makes the paper.

48. Touchy, touchy...
Albuquerque is a hole.

I've been there a few times. I like most of the state. Albuquerque, though, sucks ass. It's ugly, trashy and outside of only a handful of places within the city, there is nothing remotely interesting there.

Even their football stadium sucks.

Though I've always enjoyed The Pit (which was a dump too until the renovations).

38. Our town in Iowa has drunks but you will never see them.
Our rather over-policed community locks people up for a little staggering or even wobbling while on a bicycle (and then almost always finding "drug parephernalia" on them.) Or for standing in a yard holding an open can of beer.

22. Hey, if you can't...
...set a friend on fire then who canya?

Maybe if that prosthetic leg had been hollowed out he could have hidden a tube run down through his shirt to it and had capacity for more than six beers, and not lost the bet. These are the kind of friends that inspire this kind of invention and creativity, and as you know, that's what makes the world go round.

42. I've been to a VN vet reunion where a prosthetic leg was filled with beer...
...and passed around for all to share. The leg was volunteered by an attendee, who unstrapped it and filled it up. It was a 3/4 leg, and it must have been designed for a capacity of at least 10 beers... :)

They must have really not like that guy.

Also, the story does not sit with me. The guy gets lit on fire and burned. His friends put him in the car, and drop him off on the side of the road.

The story says the leg was still burning when they showed up. So it was on fire for how long? And it was still burning while he was in the car?

two drunk guys shooting apples of their heads with a hunting bow. Picture on the front page of the Denver post, x ray with arrow in eye socket. The dude lived.

And then there was the guys at the cement plant in madras oregon, decided to pour wet conctrete in ones ass to make a concrete turd, no really this is true. He showed up in the ER to have it removed and his ass sewed shut, forever. My friend was the attending nurse on call.

I mean come on he's obviously missing some body mass to absorb tha alcohol but nobody normal is drunk enough after six beers surely to either a)"lose" a bet like that and even more so b)agree to being set on fire.

Unless those six beers were Dogfish Head 120s in gallon jugs methinks there is a "after a day of heavy drinking already" missing from the start of this story.
