Kevin Costner's oil skimmer to work in fouled Gulf
Source: Associated Press

PORT FOURCHON, La. — Kevin Costner's company has sent an oil-skimming vessel to help clean some of the crude that has fouled the Gulf of Mexico.

The actor told workers and visitors Thursday who had come to see the latest in the fight against the oil spill that "the machine I once dreamed of is here to help you."

The Ella G, now one of the Vessels of Opportunity, was retrofitted to receive oil and water from the skimmer, separate the oil and place it in storage tanks, and return the cleaned water to the Gulf. It had once been an offshore supply barge.

The system was built in 10 days, and BP chief operating officer Doug Suttles says the system offers many advantages. He says it can remove more oil, stay at sea indefinitely, and skim in seas up to 10 feet. Most skimmers can't work in seas higher than 4 feet.

3. Thanks for the link
I really, really hope his "machine" (for lack of a better term) works, and works exceptionally well. It would be nice to have some good news about this BP fucked-up fiasco for a change.

Kudos and a big "thank you" to Mr. Costner.

Every time I read about Costner's oil-skimming vessel, I never see a photo of it.

10. It doesn't appear to be a vessel, per se
It's a centrifugal device that looks to me to be either placed on the seabed or operated from a shipdeck:

20. Kudos to Mr. Costner for investing in something that can help the planet ...
... instead of just buying another multi-million-dollar home with that money ... or just sitting around counting it.

He's not special because he's a movie star ... but I have to give him credit for doing something worthwhile with his money. May it reap emotional (and financial) rewards for him and the other investors (because then other investors may follow suit).
