Jindal OKs abortion restrictions
Source: Associated Press

Women getting abortions in Louisiana will be required to get ultrasounds, and doctors who perform elective abortions won’t be covered under medical malpractice laws under bills Gov. Bobby Jindal signed Tuesday.

performed"

So what the hell is really the point of this?

7. Crist vetoed a similar bill
in Florida which applied to all abortions, including very early 1st timester ones. I don't think it included that malpractice clause though.

8. It Was Never Easy to Get an Abortion in LA
I used to live there and met women who were having babies with extreme deformities who believed it was better to abort than bring those poor children into this world. These women went to Texas for abortions because of the hassle they had to deal with in LA. It is disgusting. Louisiana is so much like a banana republic--been there, done that.

...these men that just can't keep their snouts out of a woman's reproductive
organs are sick. They want to control anything she does with her body.

18. A quick search shows me 1-3 providers in the state
http://www.abortion.com/
This link seems to be accurate, as far as my state (WA) is. I looked at a couple that didn't list ones I knew of.

http://www.prochoice.org/pregnant/find/state.asp?strState=LA
This one shows 3 and this gem:
"Abortion providers in Louisiana are required to distribute materials prepared by the state and/or conduct state-directed counseling. In this state, women must contact and/or visit an abortion provider and then wait 24 hours before obtaining an abortion. Patients under the age of 18 who are not emancipated must obtain one parent’s consent before obtaining an abortion. Patients who are NOT able to obtain parental consent can proceed through a process known as “judicial bypass.”"

26. There are Definitely Providers
It is just that the anxiety they put the women through is horrible. Remember Louisiana is a Catholic state--the counties are even called parishes not counties. I was living there in the 90's, early 2000's when I saw how the women were treated. The ones I knew went over to Texas, rather than deal with the "kindness" of Louisiana's people. I'm also not sure, but think Louisiana has a shorter timeline in which to perfom abortions than some other states.

25. it was "easy" (if abortion was ever easy) in new orleans the late 70s/early 80s
there was abortion on demand in new orleans if you said carrying a baby to term would cause cause mental health/stress in the late 70s/early 80s, but the clinic i'm thinking of sure got hassled like hell by protestors/weirdos == (the owner was a foreign-born doc and a kind man, lost touch w. him many years ago, but i'll presume he eventually retired rather than dealing w. the ever-increasing anti-abortion hysteria that came into play in the rush limbaugh era

but i will say, there WAS a day when you didn't have to drive yr friend to jackson, mississippi to get an abortion, where the v. idea of mississippi being more "advanced" than louisiana would be considered a joke

that day might have lasted ten minutes but it happened

17. "hope it can dissuade some women..by having to learn more about their pregnancies"
http://www.thetowntalk.com/article/20100707/NEWS01/100707006/Jindal+signs+abortion+regulation+bills+
"Supporters said they hope it can dissuade some women from getting an abortion by having to learn more about their pregnancies.

Opponents said requiring a procedure that might not be available at a free clinic nearby will make it more difficult and costly for women to get abortions."

Yeah, like women are too stupid to know what being pregnant is about.

21. Women have to PAY for ultrasounds.
Wow... furthermore, there are now two classes of malpractice in the state, solely defined by abortion.

24. i don't think we've been able to get an abortion in louisiana for years
Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 08:37 PM by pitohui
cruel and hateful as this bill is, and it is cruel and hateful to force a rape victim or someone else who can't handle carrying a baby to term to PAY for an ultrasound, i don't know where you would go these days to get an abortion in louisiana anyway -- and by these days, i mean in the 21st century, there was a time in the 70s and 80s where we did have abortion on demand in louisiana for those who needed it

it is a sad day when mississippi has become more liberal but that day came a long while back

for instance, uppity person's link to abortion.com shows as its only louisiana link the "gentilly medical clinic," the owner was a kind and helpful doc back in the day, but even before gentilly was washed away by katrina, i'm pretty sure they weren't there any more for some years -- could be wrong but they were just getting hassle after hassle for year after year and that stuff gets old, you know?

he prefers to drown newborns. Abortion is too expensive.
