ACLU issues travel warnings to Arizona

The nation's top civil liberties group on Wednesday issued travel alerts for Arizona, saying the state's new law cracking down on illegal immigrants could lead to racial profiling and warrantless arrests.

American Civil Liberties Union affiliates in Arizona, New Mexico and 26 other states put out the warnings in advance of the Fourth of July weekend. The Arizona chapter has received reports that law enforcement officers are already targeting some people even though the law doesn't take effect until July 29, its executive director said.

The alerts are designed to teach people about their rights if police stop and question them.

The Arizona law requires police, while enforcing other laws, to question a person's immigration status if officers have a reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime for legal immigrants to not carry their immigration documents and bans day laborers and people who seek their services from blocking traffic on streets.

(CNN) -- Dozens of affiliates of the American Civil Liberties Union have issued travel alerts for people heading to Arizona this Fourth of July holiday weekend -- the group's latest effort to condemn the state's new immigration law.

Arizona's measure stipulates that police can ask the residency status of people being investigated for a crime.

"Although the law is not scheduled to go into effect until July 29, the ACLU is concerned that some law enforcement officers are already beginning to act on provisions of the law," the ACLU said on its website.

"We hope the alerts provide people with some measure of protection from illegal harassment from law enforcement and inform them of their rights should they encounter it."

saying that NM driver's licenses won't be accepted there as identification since licenses without SSNs are issued to illegals to get them to register and insure their cars---and it's working. The message is clear: vacation and spend your money elsewhere.

Arizona seems to be shooting itself in the economic foot very efficiently.

Although calls for federal immigration reform are not new, several participants say a statement being released today is a significant new move because the business community is collectively taking a stand. Businesses - and indirectly their employees - say they have been bearing the brunt of nationwide boycotts by cities, counties, groups and performers as a result of Senate Bill 1070.
