Report: Karzai holds secret talks with top militant
Source: MSNBC

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has held face-to-face talks with Sirajuddin Haqqani, leader of a particularly brutal militant group with ties to al-Qaida, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday.

The presidential office reportedly denied that any meeting took place between Karzai and the Haqqani network, a group high on the CIA's hit list that is believed to have been behind some of the most sophisticated attacks across Afghanistan.

Pakistan's army chief and the head of the country's intelligence services are thought to have accompanied Haqqani to the talks, sources told Al Jazeera. Pakistan's intelligence and military officials have long been thought to foster close links with members of the Taliban and other militant groups working in Afghanistan.

The reports have fuelled speculation that Pakistan is trying to forge a deal that would safeguard its interests in Afghanistan, Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr said from Kabul.

14. Likely secret talks
Using the news of Afghanistan's "newfound mineral wealth" as leverage; Give the militants an IOU for a cut of the profits, if they side with the government and sign on with the Afghan defense forces.

I doubt the US knows, or would approve.

IF my guess is the case... then Afghanistan is going to be back in the middle of a brutal civil war five years from now, when the fact that its "mineral wealth" is likely heavily overstated comes to light, and these militants are left with empty wallets on payday.

6. WTF.....
Why are we still there? Obama was just given another golden opportunity with the Mcrystal flap to change the direction and get us the FU@K out of there. Good men and women are dying because our leaders are idiots incapable of thinking in anything but Black and White. With us or against us, war on a tactic, etc... The arrogance of Presidents, regardless of political party affiliation, is astounding. I had such hope for Obama and he has failed on many fronts, as far as I am concerned.

We need to remind Obama that it is we the people that want an end to these bloody wars none of which are "good wars". I feel if we refuse to launch massive protests then the cause of those that seek peace will be forever damaged, already pundits are asking why was it OK for the anti-war protestors to constantly protest Bush but there seems to be a lack of commitment in the protest of Obama who is doing nothing more but finishing out Bush's third term, regarding the WARS.

15. We also realize that Iraq and Afghanistan are different situations
Of course some DU'ers see brown people speaking some sort of moon language, and couldn't be bothered to give a shit to notice the differences. Morocco? Iraq? Yemen? Brazil? All the same!
