UK to press ahead with deep-sea oil exploration

Britain will continue deep-sea oil exploration off the coast of Scotland despite concerns about safety raised by the Gulf of Mexico spill, the country's energy minister said Thursday.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said regulation is strong enough "to manage the risk of deep-water drilling."

Huhne told an energy conference in London that Britain's North Sea oil fields still have the potential to produce 20 billion barrels of oil, and called for further investment in exploration, production and development.

There are more than 20 offshore rigs in Britain's North Sea, although they do not operate in waters as deep as the Gulf. The area just starting to be explored west of the Shetland islands, off the northern tip of Scotland, is deeper than the existing North Sea wells.
