Oiled dolphin found near Ft. Pickens
Source: fox10tv.com PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla (WALA) - The tide isn't just washing the oil over the beach. Wildlife is starting to feel the impact as well. An oiled dolphin was found beached on the shore.

"It had beached itself. Its sides were covered in a quarter inch of oil. We started splashing water, scraped oil off it sides and off its eyes," said Christy Travis, who found the dolphin. Help came immediately and they were able to stabilize the young female. Sadly, she died shortly after. What's worse, is she may not be the last.

"It was very sad, it would make you cry. It was crying. There was pod of dolphins just off surf and they were jumping out of water and they were making noise," said Travis.

This is the first report of a dolphin found covered in oil on the Gulf.

Well this maybe the first video report of a Dolphin covered in oil but there have been many found dead already! And many more to come apparently!

Dolphin Ballet
by Robert Charles Howard
What earthly grace can match
The artful water weaving dolphin
Leaving behind a wake of gentle waves -
Her white, black, silver blue body
Shimmering in the afternoon sun?

Raising herself on her tailfins,
She playfully skitters the surface,
Corkscrews through the water
And arches a flawless somersault.

Diving nose first into the froth,
She drives to the darkest depths
And churns her powerful engine upward
Bursting into air to pierce the flaming hoop
To the oohs and applause of a large pod
Of short-sleeved hominids
Bleachered beyond the rails.

After downing a well earned herring
From the trainer's outstretched hand,
She obligingly chatters into a mike.

Burrowing into quiet depths,
The dolphin lingers for a moment
Perhaps to dream of the fresh sea air
And the borderless waters
In the golden days before the ships came.

8. This is where they live. They roam all over the Gulf, Caribbean, Atlantic,
and other seas. They're just part of that ecosystem. It would be damn near impossible to scare them off.

Very sad.

I have seen them many times cavorting around the boats I was in. They are beautiful, magical creatures.

19. They are being driven close to shore
There are still areas where the waters are clean between the slicks/plumes of the deeper waters and the shore lines. They are running out of space. They do not like to die at sea as they don't want to be eaten by their one natural enemy, the shark. The other tragedy is that they do not abandon one another. When one is sick others will go under the sick one and push his/her blow hole above the water surface. When one beaches the others will stay with it, or in this case, try to.
I guess this was documented because BP goons could not get to the area to dispose of the body and/or chase the journalists. It was also a public beach...

5. why is America not our priority?

The time has come to redeploy all U.S. troops to the gulf where there is much work to be done.

This must be our priority; we must save America!

12. apparently most dolphins are never found
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 10:44 PM by pitohui
considering the VERY large numbers of dolphins i saw w. my own eyes at grand isle/grand terre -- where the oil is not a "slick" but instead like mousse or chocolate pudding, in other words, there is no water now, it's this...grody pudding...i'm told there is nothing to be done for these dolphins but let them sink and die, we don't have the tech to save them

surprised a dolphin in florida is the first "official" oil slick dolphin to die, i guarantee that there have been many many many others

i wish i knew what to say or do, as far as i know, we don't have the tech to save the oiled dolphins, altho we now know enough to help some of the birds

14. You would need an actual plan to save them
All we have now is a boom and burn action!

http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0620/bp-burning-sea-turtles-alive/
A rare and endangered species of sea turtle is being burned alive in BP's controlled burns of the oil swirling around the Gulf of Mexico, and a boat captain tasked with saving them says the company has blocked rescue efforts.

Mike Ellis, a boat captain involved in a three-week effort to rescue as many sea turtles from unfolding disaster as possible, says BP effectively shut down the operation by preventing boats from coming out to rescue the turtles.

"They ran us out of there and then they shut us down, they would not let us get back in there," Ellis said in an interview with conservation biologist Catherine Craig.

Part of BP's efforts to contain the oil spill are controlled burns. Fire-resistant booms are used to corral an area of oil, then the area within the boom is lit on fire, burning off the oil and whatever marine life may have been inside.

"Once the turtles get in there they can't get out," Ellis said.

Dr. Brian Stacey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told NPR last week that, although there are five different species of sea turtle in the Gulf of Mexico, the majority of the ones found affected by the oil spill are Kemp's Ridleys, "the rarest of them all."

Ellis confirmed that he's mostly been seeing Kemp's Ridleys.

16. the turtles have a place to be put/recovered
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 11:42 PM by pitohui
it is possible to rescue/recover the sea turtles, they have a pretty good program and some large tanks at audubon aquarium in new orleans where endangered sea turtles have been rehabbed and eventually released OK

as far as i know, there is not a facility for treating/keeping oiled dolphins

i'm not the be all and end all of knowledge but AFAIK i would know where to report any oiled bird i see and i would know where to take/report any oiled turtle

i would not know what to do w a dolphin, upon asking, i've heard "not much we can do"

if i find out otherwise i'll update this thread

20. Call the local state EPA or State Fish and Wildlife Service
Rescue workers will be there in no time. They do have facilities to take them to.

23. Most of the big
parks and aquariums made room for them and set up as they expected to get them in. Sea world here takes in injured dolphins frequently as well as manatees. I know they did the same at a facility in Clearwater as far as preparation.

There is a hotline to call if one finds an oiled animal on BP and the govt site.
Hugs.
