Oil Cleanup Workers Can't Get Paid
BP Subcontractor Says Checks Coming Monday

METAIRIE, La. -- The WDSU newsroom has fielded dozens of calls from people who say they're helping to clean up the oil but can't get paid for their work.

A group of response workers in Metairie said they waited on checks that never came this week. The person who hired them said it's all a mix-up.

If the oil spill itself is not frustrating enough for some, try not getting paid for response efforts out in the Gulf.

The workers have been cleaning up boom and spraying down barges. They are employed by a company called Tamarah, a subcontractor for BP.

My magazine's publisher got the contract and paid to provide Haz-Mat training for workers so they would be safe, but now BP won't send the check to cover the $30,000 round-trip cost of getting them all there and back! They were supposed to leave here Monday, and there's no word yet when they will be able to go. This is criminal!

3. Typical oilfield stuff - can't tell you how often I would have to reimbursed later

for many out of pocket expenses when I worked there for a decade.

Penalties, delayed bonuses, missent paychecks to another branch, up to 6 months delay in paying invoices.

That's the kind of cheap bastards the industry is composed of.
