Inquiry: Police not justified in Pole Taser death
The Associated Press
Friday, June 18, 2010; 1:42 PM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- A public inquiry into the death of a Polish immigrant has found that the police officers who confronted the man at Vancouver's airport were not justified in using their Taser stun gun repeatedly to subdue him.

Inquiry commissioner Thomas Braidwood said Friday the officers could not have reasonably perceived Robert Dziekanski was a threat when he picked up a stapler during their confrontation at the airport in October 2007.

Dziekanski died after being shocked five times with a Taser stun gun by police in an incident that was widely seen around the world after a bystander filmed it.

Dziekanski, who speaks only Polish, apparently had become upset after waiting 10 hours at the airport for his mother.

1. I'm sure that will be of great consolation to
Robert Dziekanski.

5. By highlighting that proactive, not reactive, steps need to be taken.
All the hand-wringing and public mea culpas in the world won't bring this dead man back to life.

LEOs should not be allowed to carry Tasers until they've been properly trained, and departments should not be allowed to issue Tasers until they can prove that they've properly trained all officers.

12. Maybe their new unofficial motto should be, "We always tase our man."

6. K&R. Thanks for posting this, Judi.
Color me jaded, but I think a US inquiry would not have found the same result.

10. I'm certain you are right, Ignis. What a damnable shame.
Reminder: George W. Bush's 1st nominee for head of Homeland Securities, Bernard Kerik, who just happens to be in prison now, was on Taser's board of directors. Small, creepy world, (politically) isn't it?

11. Here, the result of an inquiry would have been a foregone
conclusion 'the investigation found that the officers acted according to procedure'!

At least their brutal actions have been condemned, which is of little help to the victim. But, it may help prevent more victims.
