Daimler To Invest $194M At Detroit Diesel Engine Plant
Source: The Wall Street Journal.

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)--German automaker Daimler AG (DAI.XE) Friday said it will invest $194 million at its Detroit Diesel engine plant in Redford, Mi., with the state of Michigan providing $57 million through tax benefits and other measures.

In a statement, Daimler said due to strong demand for BlueTec diesel engines production at the Redford plant will be increased substantially. A large part of the investment will be spent on cylinder head production.

The funds will also be used to redesign the manufacturing facilities, improve the plant's infrastructure and purchase additional machinery. The measures for increasing production capacity will start next month and be finalized in September next year.

Detroit Diesel is a producer of on-highway medium and heavy-duty diesel engines and part of the Daimler Trucks North America operations.

1. Common Rail Fuel Injection
What's old is new again.

In the early last century common rail FI was the norm. The camshaft opened the injector though a push rod arrangement. A wedge was inserted into the linkage to increase the length of open time, increasing fuel flow.

3. Yes. Formed by General Motors in 1937.

In 1988 Roger Penske purchased DDC and turned the company around. GM was about to close the doors and Penske took them from having less than 5% of the heavy truck market to more than 30%, in the process saving several thousand union jobs.
