LAPD arrests at least 9 outside Staples Center after Lakers win
Source: LA Times

The Los Angeles Police Department declared an unlawful assembly at 11th and Figueroa streets near Staples Center minutes after the Lakers beat the Celtics.

At least nine people have been arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and inciting a riot.

Boisterous crowds are gathering on several street corners as officers in riot gear and on horseback are patrolling the area.

Police officials said declaring an unlawful assembly legally allows officers to begin arresting people.

10. I guess LA is a little wary of riots
They've had two big ones there that I know of, though neither of those was the result of a sports victory

13. UPDATE: Lakers celebration turns ugly as police, motorists come under attack
Source: LA Times

he Los Angeles Lakers victory in the NBA championships ended on a sour note as Los Angeles Police Department officers clashed with rowdy fans.

The LAPD brought large numbers of officers into the Staples Center area hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's looting and violence. But fans went on a rampage in some parts of downtown L.A., throwing rocks, shattering windows, rocking cars and setting fire to at least one vehicle and several other objects.

At Figueroa Street and Venice Boulevard, police fired less-than-lethal rounds at fans after they overturned a city parking enforcement vehicle and set fire to orange fire cones. On the LAPD's tactical frequency, officers at the intersection were heard requesting permission to fire projectiles at a group of men throwing chunks of concrete at them. The permission was granted.

Among other incidents:

Understood why fans felt it necessary to tear up the town in a celebration of a sports victory. Celebrating is one thing, but breaking store windows, burning cars, looting, is totally wrong and they know it. It also confirms to people across the country that certain fans are just Thugs.

Seems to me, in past years the Oakland Raiders were always known as the "Nasty" team, but when the Raiders won the Superbowl back in the day, their fans never rioted. That says a lot.

So pointless! I don't get it.

I suppose maybe one could see the throwing of a hissy fit if one's team lost, but the home team won. Sheesh!

I do not get it.

This is one of many reasons why I'm glad I wasn't born with the sports gene. Neither was my husband. Don't want ANY part of it, especially with shit like this.

23. Your avitar reminded me of the writer whose car was assaulted by a fan screaming "NINERS!"
I can't remember who the writer was but the visual in my mind was like the old "Fugitive" series when Kimball gets a look at the one armed man.

I always remember that when I hear of sports violence. I scream "Niners!" no matter who is playing. Because it doesn't make a difference. The drunken lout's team has won.

It is bread and circus. My cousin played baseball for decades. My family would barely pay attention until he got into the playoffs. Which he did quite regularly. With many teams. Which he was fired from. Then many teams would hire him and we would have to search to find what team he would be playing for so we could ignore him till the playoffs.

Go sports!

33. Morons..
I lived in L.A. when the Lakers won in 2000. I had just moved from NJ, where a few years earlier, NY Rangers fans celebrated peacefully after their first Stanley Cup victory in 44 years.

I guess NY fans get victories so often that we know how to celebrate without violence (haha). :)

44. As a native of Southern California...
I HATE HATE HATE THE LAKERS. They do not reflect in anyway what other LA sports franchises such as the Dodgers are about. Their players are arrogant and unsportsmanlike exactly like these "fans." Funny how that works.

The Lakers may have come away with the win but they are not by any means true champions.

the reason the Fakers won: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOOOhyGGMyA

Bynum hacks Perkins and Bryant plays the man and not the ball.
