Oregon County Bans All Marriages
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3564893.stm

Confused by the twists and turns of the US gay marriage issue, Oregon's Benton County has decided to err on the side of caution and ban all weddings.
Until the state decides who can and cannot wed, officials in the county have said no-one can marry - even heterosexual couples.

They hit upon the plan to ensure that none of the county's 79,000 residents are subject to unfair treatment. Gay marriage has proved controversial, deeply dividing US public opinion.

Lawsuit threat

The last Benton County marriage licences were issued on Tuesday and, from now on, any locals wanting to get hitched will have to go elsewhere.

"It may seem odd, but we need to treat everyone in our county equally," county commissioner Linda Modrell told Reuters.

1. I like their style
"Oregon not only has the only county in the nation issuing illegal (same-sex) marriage licenses, we probably have the only county in the nation refusing to issue marriage licenses at all."

Oregon's most populous county, Multnomah County, is the only jurisdiction in the US that is still issuing licenses for same-sex marriages, handing out 2,550 licenses since 3 March.

2. Heard this story on NPR this AM
We should all send our support to the Benton county commissioner. I think that this is the best way to handle the controversy, equality for all.

5. Can a county...
Deny people rights explicitly given in state law?

I like their motivation, but I'm always warry of denying rights at fiat.

7. marriage
The state has NO business in the business of social engineering!

Whom a person loves or lives with is none of the states business.
Families need not be nuclear to rear children.
Some parents must put their kids into daycare to work and that is COMMUNAL child rearing BTW.There ain't no daddy or mommy present for most of the childhood of the kids of some working parents if you get down to it.I don't know where this whining about how kids need daddy and mommy in a marriage situation changes anything when kids spend all day at daycare, school or as latchkey kids microwaving their own dinner'anyways cause mom and dad are at the office taking care of the boss's big baby business instead of being present for their own kids.
The kid neglect childrearing'failure' situation churches whine about when they defend marriage has nothing to do with divorce or one parent childrearing it has to do with the rampant GREED of corporations for working people's time and labor.

This silly superstition of husband and wife is based on religion and feudalism. In the past men could legally beat their wives senseless if he didn't like her behavior.Because in marriage women could do nothing to save herself from a dominating male because as a human being she no longer existed as a legal entity.Marriage made her the husband's chattel .She was a non-person according to law.
Marriage is an over- romanticized bondage. It is really just a relationship convenience that has a side effect of reinforcing a sick hierarchical social structure that will always benefit the wealthy.Marriage discourages different people from helping each other, getting involved, sharing food and sharing housing and lessening burdens on each other by living communally.

(communal living is NOT the same thing as polygamy which is marriage misogyny and using women like a harem) Don't mix lifestyles of polygamy with communal sharing of space, food bills. This is what one thing I think neocons are trying to do to fend off people looking at what marriage is,and the republican church social engineering of relationships.By mixing polygamy and communal living together in when they bring up lifestyles in an anti-gay marriage context it confuses issues.Communal living and sharing is bad for profits.
Marriages break up because monogamy is not natural for some humans ,while it is comfortable for others, people change, people get sick of each other, relationships die all the time, marriage is artificially forcing a permanence in a relationship that might not be so permanent otherwise..

Choosing who is to have hospital visitation rights, insurance, wills etc, should be honored because it is the request of a person in the hospital. All the benefits of a relationship should be for anyone they choose as their significant other.Divorce and remarriage basically does this with alot of paperwork and bullshit in the way.. National health care could signal the end of the states interference in the marriage business.Maybe this is why republicans hate national healthcare..A marriage is a consensual spiritual merging made in church. When did it become a state made legal bondage?

In reality marriage is used as a form of social engineering by the state. This crazy suburban dream of a 'nuclear' family arrangement does alot to keep more people Dependant on employers ,mortgage companies, banks, and work than anything else.Kinship and neighborhood ties have been deliberately severed over generations to make people emotionally Dependant on work and make 'success' their real lover. How many hours more do Americans work and how little benefits we get compared to those socially democratic, sharing space Europeans?

Kids and dependents by necessity of these artificial social arrangements of husband-wife marriage alliances force an unrealistic 'Independence' model upon humanity that is unsustainable and incompatible with happiness for some people, especially in an era of privatization and focus on ownership..
It's marriage that keeps the wage system using people up,keeps us bound in this one way of life, one style of child rearing, one kind of social arrangement, selling our lives and labor to feed our obligatory children we may or may not want but had anyway..
It's interesting to note the statistics that say most child abuse happens in the home perpetrated by caretakers and parents. And people choosing to be child-free is gaining momentum as the truth of past abuse at home is talked about among young adults.

Gays are not what the church and state wants so the state will fight for the way that benefits the elites and churches. They want the people to shut up and do as they say.
Gay people already refused some of the attempts at social engineering of their sexuality.Homosexuality goes against the church corporate state elitist utopia that sustains a social game of haves and have no ts.Elitists want a land of frustrated servile, unhappy breadwinners living at home like little lords on islands of private property dominating and letting out the frustration at work upon their state sanctioned chattel a frightened ,hopeless and submissive wife as part pretty upstanding woman, mommy, sex toy and punching bag popping lots of kids to keep the father hopping at work.In reality marriage does what schooling does for making future terrorized workers out of innocent free willed children that will grow up learning the value and (misery)of work, playing the game of success only to toil for corporations all their lives awaiting their rewards in heaven...Can you say generational Dupes?.

Tribal societies existed without wage systems or nuclear families hellbent on keeping up with the Joneses living in separate houses, masquerading as it's 'social glue'.Anthropologists have debunked how the one man one woman marriage game is not what holds civilization together like the fundamentalists claim it does.
Different cultures had very different perceptions of wealth, child rearing and sex. Some cultures are more egalitarian and realistic than ours is. They had less problems with understanding gender expressions like gay bisexuality or transgendered.they also had many forms of family and relationships. Instead of pushing just one man and one woman.

8. Let me get this right
First off, I think the characterization of heterosexual marriage as wholly bad is hyperbole and does more to make you look reactionary, than it does to support your argument.

We eliminate marriage as a civil institution, maintain power of attorney laws, and support communal living?

I know that's a groos simplification but I'm trying to grasp the totality of what youa re saying and I don't think I'm getting it... any further explanation would be greatly appreciated.
