Officials:Clean-Up Crews Trampling Pelican Nests/Broken Eggs,Dead Chicks Found In Plaquemines Parish
Source: New Orleans News

BELLE CHASSE, La. --

Workers assigned to clean up stretches of the Louisiana coast that are contaminated by oil have been trampling pelican nests in the process, Plaquemines Parish officials charged.

Parish President Billy Nungesser and Sen. David Vitter met with leaders of the Humane Society of the United States to assess the situation. Nungesser said the Plaquemines Parish Inland Waterways Strike Force recently discovered broken eggs and crushed chicks on Queen Bess Island.

"The people BP sent out to clean up oil trampled the nesting grounds of Brown Pelicans and other birds," he said. "Pelicans just came off the endangered species list in November of last year. They already have the oil affecting their population during their reproduction time, now we have the so called clean-up crews stomping eggs.

"The lack of urgency and general disregard for Louisiana's wetlands and wildlife is enough to make you sick."

BP won't allow local volunteers to clean up the mess because they need to be trained says BP. Thanks for all the training BP.

In other news: Check out this one-ton 'mass of tarball material'
http://blog.al.com/live/2010/06/one_ton_tarball_giant_tarball.html

One of two, 1-ton masses of tarball material recovered June 11, 2010, south of Perdido Pass at the Florida/Alabama line is seen on the deck of the liftboat Sailfish, a Vessel of Opportunity working as part of the BP Deepwater Horizon spill response.

shrimp boats with outriggers on each side are dragging mesh oil-collection bags made of perforated webbing near the ocean surface. As the boat trawls to collect oil patches, the bags, attached to an aluminum frame, collect oil.

When filled, the bags are disconnected from the frame by crew on support vessels, and then towed to a lift barge for hoisting into a collection barge.

22. Yes, I read the article
If you look at Valdez, the areas that they did the most aggressive cleanup on are still in the worst condition, the areas they pretty much left alone recovered relatively quickly.

And as far as it being on BP, Obama can't just sit back and lay it all on BP. It's our country and our Gulf and he needs to marshall the forces of the US to clean up the mess. Enough finger pointing, just send BP the bill. Seriously, do you not get that? Doesn't it seem wierd that he just keeps letting BP run the show? Personally I don't think he has a clue what to do other than blame someone and "demand action".

As far as I'm concerned, BP should be tasked with fixing the well and charged for whatever cleanup the US directs to be done. The cleanup of the Gulf should not be left in their hands. You can't say "aw, it's BP's fault, they have to do all the cleanup and hey they did a crappy job! Now our Gulf Coast is ruined!" It's our coastline and we have the most vested interest so we should direct the cleanup. Obama is falling on his face here.

18. Or What Exactly?
...Better get their shit together or what? What the fuck are you going to do about it? Commit an "act of terrorism" or something? Are we headed to a Matewan-style showdown with BP?

I myself have called for Rupert Murdoch and his entire organization to have their heads mounted on poles.

If you do it by yourself you are a "lone-gunman" wacko. If you organize on a small scale, you are a cultist. If you organize on a large scale, you are a terrorist. Take your pick.

It's very difficult to watch your step when you are removing carcasses in the dead of night. There is bound to be a little collateral damage. Perfectly understandable, really.

I was wondering how so many nests got destroyed. An occasional accident may cause a few to be stepped on, but these were trampled.

Dead body snatchers don't much care about soon to be little live baby birds I expect.

19. Ugh. There was a news item on this a while back...YOU CAN'T CLEAN MARSHES...
...it has been demonstrated by past oil spills that marshes left alone recover far better than those that people attempt to clean up.

21. sigh -- why do you people keep crediting vitter and jindal w truth? they are GOP pro paid liars...
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 09:35 PM by pitohui
i'm gonna make it short and sweet, yes, there was a nesting ground over-run by clean-up crews doing do-nuts, no, it wasn't queen bess, it was on grand isle proper and it wasn't pelicans, it was the the least tern nesting site, and yes we were all v. upset, and it is now flagged, and the activity is not gonna happen again

as far as plaquemines i always have to remember if you're not from here then perhaps you truly do not know that officials in plaquemines and jefferson make public corruption in new orleans seem like a pleasant day in spring, if you believe that nungesser is telling the truth, if you believe that vitter and jindal are telling the truth, if you believe that ANY public official in jefferson parish is telling the truth then bless your heart, you're not from around here and you may not even be from the reality-based universe

jindal, vitter, nungesser et al would like to spit up 1 billion dollars for spreading a few million dollars worth of sand, have the evidence blown away in the first tropical storm (gulf of mexico storm season just beginning) and put the rest of the $ in their pocket, if you think nungesser or jindal care abt pelicans or even know what a pelican looks like, you must be from new york city or you're anderson cooper or something

it's a SCAM people, they are out to line their pockets, as republicans and small-town racist politicos are ALWAYS out to do

rescue workers are taking GREAT care on queen bess not to go into the center of the colony and scare healthy birds off healthy babies, even if it means that if they see an oiled bird go into the center, they can't catch it -- i trust these people to make the right decisions, they are not working for BP, they are working for the BIRDS and the long term health of the species/colony

i had a report from boots on the ground today and i believe this person (an actual bird rescue officer who is THERE) a lot more than i believe all the hysteria i see online and a FUCK of a lot more than i believe shitheads like nungesser and vitter

every dollar you put into the pocket of a vitter, a jindal, or a nungesser, is a dollar that smears and hurts a decent person (think abt the cruel trashing of blanco for instance)

at the end of the day get your information abt birds from birds/ornithologists on the ground, nobody else knows what they're talking abt, half the time they're just making shit up -- hell, most people who are not either birders or ornithologists don't even know how to ID a bird species, and i've never personally been impressed with the humane society us knowledge of birds, they have NO idea how to handle a bird humanely or how to rescue a bird and if they've turned up to second guess people who have good hard experience doing this, well, why am i not surprised, they're a bunch of self-promoting asshats in my book, they do NOTHING for birds (i can't judge if they do something well for cats or dogs but i hope i do, otherwise they are a complete and total scam without conscience)

25. Louisiana cleanup crews trampled pelican nests, official says
Source: CNN

Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- Crews cleaning up the oil in one Louisiana parish have trampled the nests and eggs of birds including the brown pelican, which came off the endangered species list last year, the head of the parish said Wednesday.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said the parish doesn't want to turn away contractors, but he called for more care when crews work in the sensitive wetlands.

He said officials recently found broken eggs and crushed chicks on Queen Bess Island, near Grand Isle.

Plastic bags containing snare boom were "recklessly placed" around the island without consideration for wildlife. In one picture released by the parish, a plastic bag was on top of a nest containing broken speckled eggs.

So now the cleanup crews are defeating themselves by hurting wildlife to protect the seas. Way to go!

The pelican is the Louisiana state bird. Trampled pelican eggs pretty much sums up what's been done to the Pelican State.
