US backs off plan to take Vt. farm for border port
Source: Associated Press

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Score one for David. Goliath decided it just wasn't worth the fight.

The federal government has decided to close a tiny U.S.-Canada border station rather than push ahead with a controversial plan to expand it by seizing a dairy farmer's land, officials announced Thursday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection had sought to renovate the sleepy Morses Line port of entry in Franklin — which gets about 2 1/2 vehicles an hour — by seizing a 2.2-acre parcel from the Rainville family dairy farm, which adjoins the station.

"This means my father can harvest his crops and go about his business without having to worry what his farm is going to look like a month down the road," said Brian Rainville, 36.

2. hypocrisy - what if this was in Calexico or Lukeville or Bisbee
All I am saying if this "little" issue came up on the Southern border the US government would spend millions to ensure our border is "safe". It just shows what a joke it all is.

4. Known terrorist plots stopped at US Canadian border (not Mexican)...
It is a fact that terrorist plots where stopped at the US port of entry North of Seattle, WA. It is also a fact that the US port of entry on the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal reservation (Northern New York State) was the entry point for terrorists in the September 11, 2001 attack and the earlier bombing of the World Trade Center. Having called New Mexico and Arizona home for the past 15 years, I've not heard of one "terrorist" who has entered the country on the US/Mexican border.

Also one can look at drug seizures b/t the US/Mexican border and the US/Canadian border and argue far worse drugs have been coming (and continue) from the North. More heroine, MDMA, meth (this is probably chaning), PCP, LSD,and "pills" have come from the North.

Most of the US/Mexico drug trade is piss poor Mexican cannabis. Meanwhile the "BC Bud" is markets prize.

It is hypocrasy that we focus on the border to the South and declare it a state of emergency (when just this week an AP news story demonstrates there is no more violence today on the Southern border than there was 10-20 years ago). Facts would tend to say the Northern border is more of a threat to our national security and to our "war on drugs" (something I am opposed towards).

Reality is we focus on the Southern border b/c of color of skin simple as that. This country was founded on racism and genocide and its doing its best to continue on...

5. oh, all those supposed threats...
that Fatherland Security told us about, but cannot present facts to the american public to back it up. Bullshit- just more instances of our great government trying to keep us afraid like a bunch of sheep. A bunch of sheep willing to sacrifice rights, ala the Patriot Act, which Obama and our congress (controlled by the "democratic" party) still have not seen fit to repeal. Oh, but it's okay now- the democrats are in charge. Patriot Act was bullshit 8 years ago, it is bullshit today.
