SC police: Black man shot to death, body dragged

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The shooting death of a black man whose body was dragged for several miles is being investigated as a possible hate crime after the arrest of a white man he worked with, South Carolina's state police chief said.

Gregory Collins, 19, is charged with murder and made his first court appearance Thursday. No bond was set and he did not yet have an attorney, Newberry County Magistrate Ron Halfacre said.

The FBI was in Newberry County in central South Carolina on Wednesday assisting in the investigation of the shooting death of Anthony Hill, 30, State Law Enforcement Division director Reggie Lloyd told The State newspaper.

Hill's body was found around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 176 and Newberry County sheriff's deputies followed a trail of blood to the home of Collins.

Sadistic, hateful act.

I hope the DA charges him with a hate crime. Because, this is a hate crime.

4. The near 11 mile trail of blood leading back to his trailer was a pretty good clue.
<snip>

Police say Hill's body was found on U.S. Highway 176 by a passing motorist around 4:30 a.m Wednesday. Deputies then followed a trail of blood they say stretched for several miles and over several roads from the crime scene to Collins' trailer.

<snip>

Investigators said that Hill and Collins were acquaintances and worked at the same chicken processing plant in Newberry County. They had spent most of Tuesday together and were at Collins' house when Hill was shot, according to investigators.

Foster said that Collins then attached a nylon rope to Hill's neck and dragged the victim until the rope snapped after several miles.

3. Killing of Anthony Hill in Newberry County Could be Hate Crime
Killing of Anthony Hill in Newberry County Could be Hate Crime

Foster has said that the incident is "one of the top three most violent crime scenes he's ever seen." Foster has been in law enforcement for 35 years.

Foster and Lloyd say they are investigating the possibility that the incident could be a hate crime. Hill is black, while Collins is white.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation.

"We're acting with an abundance of caution, and we're looking at that as one avenue," Foster said. "It doesn't necessarily mean that it is a hate crime, or that it will be judged a hate crime, or that it willl be judged a hate crime in the end. We want to go ahead while we're doing the investigation to have a joint investigation with the FBI, who has jurisdiction over hate crimes."

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford issued a statement on the killing, a rarity for the governor in pending criminal cases. He urged the public to remain calm until the investigation is complete.

"If this ends up being the case, we recognize it and condemn it for what it would be - an isolated incident of hate that is indeed to be deeply condemned from all corners of the state and nation. It would represent an event that certainly does not accurately reflect the good and decent people of South Carolina, and an incident that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Sanford wrote.

5. I want to thank young Gregory for reducing the likelihood
Of his ever being out of jail long enough to reproduce. There's no way to undo what he's done, but at least those superior white genes he treasures stop here.

He's 19. For a racist, sadistic impulse he just threw himself away like garbage.

That is like investigating the possibility that water is wet. I hope these cupcakes enjoy their prison term.

13. What use is there in charging for a hate crime?
South Carolina is a death penalty state. Assuming a guilty verdict is rendered, as well as a death sentence being returned, how much more can the accused be punished if convicted??

Our legal system only allows for a single stacking of enhancements to the crime an his use of a gun to commit the murder already takes advantage of that capability. Piling additional enhancing circumstance on does not increase the penalty, nor the punishments which can be imposed.

All labelling it as a "hate crime" does is make you feel better...are you so easily mollified with placebos?

15. Hate crimes are based on the mental state of the offender- just as other violent crimes are
and have been for many centuries under both statutory and common law.

18. Classifying crimes as hate crimes also sends a message
about the particularly unacceptable nature of the motivation behind the crime. I see it as a useful way for our society to communicate its values.

16. It's either a hate crime or Collins is insane.
I can't think of any other circumstance where a murderer would leave a trail of blood for law enforcement to follow.
