President Obama, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to Face Off Over Immigration at White House
Source: ABC News

President Obama sits down with Arizona's Republican Gov. Jan Brewer today for the first time since the state passed its controversial new immigration law.

The Arizona law, signed in April, requires state law enforcement officers to determine the immigration status of someone they've stopped, detained or arrested if there is "reasonable suspicion" the individual is in the country illegally and turn over offenders to federal immigration authorities.

The measure has sparked national debate, including boycotts of Arizona by some states, and drawn sharp criticism from civil rights groups, national police chiefs and President Obama, who's called the law "misguided" and warned it could be applied in a "discriminatory fashion."

Brewer, who requested the meeting with Obama while in Washington for a meeting of the Council of Governors, has insisted the law is no different from existing federal guidelines and is being mischaracterized by critics, some of whom have not read it.

1. Why do they express this in such negative terms?
If they want to understand anything, it will be a discussion. ABC sounds like they will need 'seconds' with them on the WH lawn.

3. There's something about this that really bothers me........
......beyond the obvious.

Maybe I'm just a cynical old heifer, but this thing with Arizona is feeling more and more like a strategic ploy, and Brewer's push for a face-to-face with Obama -- didn't the WH say yesterday that he was "too busy" to meet with her while she was in DC? -- just puts another layer of icing on it for me. I mean, why meet with Obama AFTER you've passed legislation that has the rest of the country looking at you like you're goofy?

They (Brewer, et al) keep saying they had to do this because Washington wouldn't do anything. Washington hasn't been doing anything about it for YEARS, so why the sudden urgency?

I imagine the exchange happening something like this......

Brewer: We have too many illegal aliens in our state!!! The tea baggers are beginning to revolt!!! You HAVE to do something!!!!

WH: Ummmm, yeah, we're a little busy at the moment. Maybe you've noticed that we're fighting two wars and dealing with an economy that is in the crapper? Tell ya what, send us all your data and impact studies and whatnot and we'll get to it when we get to it.

Brewer: Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

Squeaky wheel, meet grease.

5. Israel has put Obama and Biden in a hell of a mess on this. Brewer will own them like she was Bibi.
Israel can stop ships in international waters to make sure they are legal. But we can't stop people on our own streets to ensure they are legal. Why can't we seal our boarder like Mexico was Gaza? They just handed Brewer an entire arsenal to use against them. The best Obama and biden can hope to establish is that Arizona doesn't have a sovereignty like israel. :wow:

They are going to have to avoid brewer and this issue like the plague now.

8. because it's discriminatory against Hispanic Americans!
Maybe you are not "brown" so you don't understand how offensive it is? Nobody's gonna ask and white folks for their papers. Plus, it give the public the right to sue individual cops for not checking papers!

12. If I were a Latino cop, I would ask whites for their papers
who the hell carries their papers anyway? They have already detained US-born Mexican-Americans and Navajo Indians. Detaining American Indians is the biggest irony.

16. I once saw a talk show, Ricky Lake I think, where they were trying to guess who's the illegal alien
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 11:39 AM by Wizard777
The audience couldn't get it right. It turned out to be the white guy. He was an illegal alien from Australia. But if he stops white people to ask them for their papers. He should do it because he's a cop that has to enforce all kinds of stupid laws. Not be cause he's Latino cop with a vendetta.

This thing has muddied the waters on several different issues. Their words will come back to haunt them and they can now easily be made to look hypocritical.

Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 03:33 PM by Wizard777

The GOP will make it about sovereign rights. The sovereign rights of Israel and Arizona. The Sovereign right to say, stay the hell out. Then AIPAC will flood them with cash.
