WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday warned of a heightened threat of attacks against Americans in the Middle East and North Africa after the assassination of the leader of the militant Islamic group Hamas.
Citing security concerns, the United States warned its citizens in Gaza to leave and advised against travel to Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, where Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was killed in an Israeli helicopter missile strike on Monday.
``In the aftermath of the killing of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a Hamas spokesman has threatened revenge against Israel and U.S. interests,'' the State Department said in a statement.
``U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.''
