Oil hits Alabama beach
Source: Associated Press

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. -- Tar balls, possibly from the massive BP oil spill, have begun washing up on an Alabama beach.

Capt. Scott Bannon of the Alabama Marine Resources on Alabama's Dauphin Island confirmed Tuesday afternoon that crews were cleaning tar from the white sands and turquoise waters of the popular vacation destination.

Bannon referred questions about the cleanup, amount of tar on the beach and plans to contain the mess to BP officials in Mobile, Ala. Bannon said the company and officials at the response headquarters in that city were in charge of responding to oiled beaches.

This is really sad. At least it looks like they as prepared as they can be for something like this there.

Crews Continue to Prepare Dauphin Island from(sic) the Oil Slick

(DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala.) - Crews continued work on both the north and south sides of Dauphin Island Wednesday to protect it before the oil hits the shores.

The second line of defense for the island is the enormous sand dunes along the south side. The idea is to break waves during high tide and keep contaminated water off the island and out of the wetlands.

On the north side of Dauphin Island, boxes are in place that will soon be loaded with polymers that attract oil and separate if from he water. Once the oil gets into the polymers, it clumps, and crews can scoop it out. Wednesday, crews had to add more sand to secure some parts that were moved by waves.

God would never curse them with oil and tar , this cannot be true! Alabama is Southern and Southern Baptist...3 friggin churches on every corner.

Surely the paper or news account got it wrong every christian in Alabama knows that God will miraculously part the oil an spare Alabama and send all oil and tar to key west where the gays live.

Revelation 8:8-9

8 Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

5. Hand Jeff Sessions a mop
though I suspect he'd just find a way to make matters worse.

This is just the beginning. This will be going on for months.

Alabama is such a poor state. This will be devastating to it,

6. It's a shame for all those in both the fishing & tourist industries that will be
affected. I hope they all sue BP into the dirt.

12. When I first visited Dauphin Isle in '87, there were tarballs on the beach...
...there are oil rigs within sight of the beach, so the beach there is not one of the cleanest as it is. Still it is a tragedy and this indicates the oil will hit the pristine beaches of nw florida. Damnit!

13. Oil hits Alabama, Mississippi barrier islands
Here is an update to your OP:

Oil hits Alabama, Mississippi barrier islands

By The CNN Wire Staff
June 1, 2010 7:57 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Rust-colored oil washed ashore on barrier islands off Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday, while more patches of crude offshore appeared to be moving toward those states' coasts, authorities reported.

Researchers scrambled to clean up tar balls and puddles of oil from the beaches of Alabama's Dauphin Island, while a strip of oil about two miles long and three feet wide stretched along Petit Bois Island, about five miles away off Mississippi, Gov. Haley Barbour's office reported.

It marked the first time oil has hit Mississippi's shores since the largest oil spill in U.S. history erupted in late April. And while tar balls associated with the Gulf spill had hit Dauphin Island, about 35 miles south of Mobile, in early May, residents said that Tuesday was the first time they had seen oil hitting the beach.

Only part of the island's beaches have been lined with protective booms, with much of those barriers lined up near a protected wildlife area on the west end of the island.
