LAPD Investigates Scuffle with Bicyclists Captured on Video

LAPD Excessive Force Probe Video
HOLLYWOOD -- The Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood area bike unit is the subject of an internal investigation after video surfaced of their response to a protest ride against British Petroleum organized by a group of bicyclists.

In the video, at least one bicyclist is detained, and an officer can be seen kicking a passing bicycle. The cyclist taking the video objects to the action, and two officers take him down, ordering him simultaneously to "get down" and "get up."

A man can be heard repeatedly asking, "What did I do?"

Now, representatives of the L.A. biking community have filed an excessive force complaint against the officers.

Videos at link. Looks like LAPD was just on an angry rampage. Rules don't apply to them, I guess.

1. Slash their budgets. It has become obvious that cops don't have enough real work to do...
...and when cops don't have enough work, they tend to prey on citizens. When we stop hearing about crap like this, we'll know we have slashed their budgets enough.

32. They have already had their budget slashed. They are no longer investigating
ANY property crimes. Period.

So there will BE no investigation whatsoever of the theft of my family keepsakes ($2500+ worth) from my storage unit that I discovered on the 29th. Not even to see if there is a pattern of activity at that particular SUCKY PUBLIC STORAGE COMPANY facility and evidence of a theft ring or an inside job (which I believe it was).

LAPD said for me to look in pawn shops and on Craig's List and let them know if I found my stuff and then they might do something.

DO NOT store anything you care about at Public Storage. Their security does nothing to deter thefts.

4. I know!
Some bicyclists don't get out of the way fast enough, so it's their own fault they get flattened. Some of them even have the temerity to object to having their lives endangered while using public roads in a lawful manner. Obnoxious!

9. Maybe, just maybe, the protesters are taking a big risk putting themselves out on the front lines...
.... against Big Oil.

Funny how you defend protests in other situations, but not this one against Big Oil.

Maybe you've encountered an obnoxious cyclist (maybe they had been run off the road or cut-off by a krazy cager) but if you have a flat tire or other mechanical breakdown cyclists are the only people to stop and ask if you need help.

Protest in front of BP headquarters. How does holding up traffic in a place unrelated to BP putting themselves at risk?

Resource pigs like you who view their cars like huge extensions of their penis' are obnoxious.

Lose some weight and get in shape; cycling ends allot of health problems and lowers medical expenses too.

But people like you live in a fool's paradise of car commercial propaganda and a reveling in their own laziness and greed for material goods.

41. Don't deflect
No one is questioning the benefits of cycling. But the question remains unanswered: is there a reason why being on a bicycle entitles the cyclist to ignore rules of the road? I can't remember the last time I saw a cyclist actually stop for a red light or a stop sign, or comply with a turn only lane, or make a proper turn signal. And before you try to dismiss me as some fossil fuel junkie, know that I too am a cyclist, but I swear, I think I'm the only one who doesn't recklessly weave in and out of traffic at will as if there were no road rules at all. If frankly pisses me off, because I have to go out and face the somewhat deserved animosity of motorists with whom I share the road on account of the irresponsible conduct of so many cyclists. It astonishes me because I'm sure that, when cyclists are behind the wheel of an automobile, they don't run red lights or fail to use turn signals or weave in and out of every narrow opening. When they are on foot, I'm sure they don't jaywalk or cross against Don't Walk lights. Yet they climb onto a bicycle, and suddenly no law nor rule nor even common courtesy applies to them anymore. I don't understand why being on a bicycle makes such a difference.

37. In California, bicyclists must follow the same rules of the road
that auto drivers are required to follow.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/about/bicycle.htm

If there's a bike path parallel and to the right of the road, and the cyclist needs to turn left, one must signal (usually hand signal), move out of the bike path to the street's left lane (if that's possible, sometimes with separated-from-the-road bike paths it is not), wait for any lights to turn green, etc.

Yes, some bicyclists seemingly hold cars behind them up (happened to me), perhaps on purpose, just like some folks in cars deliberately throw amber-colored bottles at cyclists in the right shoulder who are not at all in the car's way (also happened to me). It's been my experience that those cases are the exceptions, not the rule.

Most prudent bicyclists try to stay out of the way of cars, just like most cars try to stay out of the way of semi-trucks, but there is little legal choice for a cyclist when turning left.
