Gulf oil spill: BP hopes to cap flow 'within 24 hours'
Source: BBC / AFP

BP hopes to contain the spill from its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours, its chief operating officer has said.

An operation using undersea robots to cut off the fractured pipe and seal it with a cap was launched on Tuesday.

"If everything goes well, within the next 24 hours, we could have this contained," Doug Suttles told the AFP news agency.

If the cap is fitted, the firm hopes to pipe most of the oil to the surface.

1. Well there's an improvement!
Until now, they have been telling us we have to wait 48 hours to find out their latest bullshit idea isn't working. Maybe about three wastes of time from now, they can get it down to a 12 hour bullshit cycle? :grr:

Unlike us, the British still have a semi-functional press.

19. The BBC is one of the most
unimpeachable news sources on the planet, unless you no longer trust anyone speaking with a British accent. I'll take one story from them over anything being dumped on us by the 24 hour news channels here that answer only to ratings.

6. No, this doesn't contrast, they're both correct
Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 01:48 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
They're no longer attempting to stop the flow, they are now attempting to contain the flow and direct it. What they're saying here is that they believe they can have it contained within the next 24 hours.

What I have to say is, at least we won't have as long to wait to know if this plan fails. :(

11. Probably because they don't give it a good chance of working.
Top Kill had a 60-70% chance of working.

If this had a better shot, they would have done this first.

34. 60 - 70 % my ass...
they tried this in the Mexico spill at 500 feet. It didn't work then, 1979 or so. 30 years ago IOW and they still haven't improved anything. This whole top kill was a ruse to buy more time, closer to getting the other holes drilled. Same as 1979.

Not sure about the current try, but as a part time mechanic/machinist, you have to straighten the thing if you want a good fit.

Should have done it first.

Could it be because this scheme lets them capture and sell the oil?

I suspect they always knew that the relief well is the only chance, and they are just keeping a continuous string of pretend efforts going until then.

47. putting a cap on the pipe is not about plugging it- it's about capturing the oil.
The "top kill" operation was the last shot at actually attempting to stop the flow of oil.
