Obama Pledges Changes to Avert Future Spills

WASHINGTON June 1, 2010 (AP)


President Barack Obama says an independent commission investigating the Gulf oil spill will thoroughly examine the disaster and its causes to ensure that the nation never faces such a catastrophe again.

Obama spoke in the Rose Garden after the group's first meeting and pledged that necessary changes will be made.

The president says that if laws are insufficient, they'll be changed. He says that if government oversight wasn't tough enough, that will change too. And Obama said if laws were broken, those who were responsible will be prosecuted.

Obama says the leaders of the commission have his support to follow the facts wherever they lead.

NEW ORLEANS - President Barack Obama vowed on Tuesday that if laws were broken in the devastating Gulf of Mexico oil spill, those responsible would be prosecuted and pledged changes to avert future disasters.

Obama, speaking to reporters in the Rose Garden after meeting the co-chairs of a new oil spill commission, said his administration was ready to step up government response to the spill, pledging to "triple the manpower" in the area.

"My solemn pledge is we will bring those responsible to justice," Obama said.

Same as with his other promises? Yes, we are all now so anxiously awaiting the implementation of single payer, and the last man coming out of Iraq. We have also been enthralled with the Justice Dept. being held accountable for politically motivated firings/hirings and have been so grateful to finally have good tough rules being enforced at MMS. Yeah, right.

10. What "if"!? It's already known laws were circumvented. The bigger issue is the

regulatory agencies that looked the other way and granted waivers and exemptions from the laws. Why have the fucking laws in the first place if you can just be allowed to not comply with them?

And stop saying "people will pay," Barry. We all know the only people who will pay for this are the taxpayers. Everyone from BP is off the hook and we all know it. You've probably reassured them them of that in a closed-door meeting somewhere already.

So here's what you do: You get hold of Brian Schweitzer and find out how much money he needs to build his coal-to-diesel plant. Then you give it to him. If we have a coal spill, we send out a Cat 966 and clean it up.
