General McChrystal says Afghan insurgents trained in Iran
Source: Reuters

By Sanjeev Miglani Sanjeev Miglani – 2 hrs 2 mins ago

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan insurgents are being trained inside Iran and given weapons to fight security forces, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces said on Sunday, joining a rising drumbeat of criticism of Iran's role in the country.

General Stanley McChrystal said coalition forces were working to stop Iran from giving material help to the Taliban who have stepped up the campaign to force foreign forces out of Afghanistan in a nine-year conflict.

"The training that we have seen occurs inside Iran with fighters moving inside Iran," he said at a news conference in response to a question on Iran's influence. "The weapons that we have received come from Iran into Afghanistan."

3. And they are trained in
Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, France, England, Germany, well probably most middle eastern and European countries, is he suggesting that we attack every country that has every trained terrorists including the US of A? General, your medications are on the top shelf of the medicine cabinet, I suggest you take them regularly. And this is the best military we have? They ran all the smart and independent thinkers out a long time ago, and this is what is left. Garbage in.......garbage out.

at McChrystal's latest excuse.

How convenient that Iran is now the target. But count on the majority of Murikans not to connect the dots.

It boggles the mind! :silly:

it hates Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. They fought back. That's it.

11. If I were Iran, hmmm....
Let's see: On my western border, there are 100,000 so American troops. On my eastern border, there are 100,000 or so American and NATO troops. America is always threatening me. Even though I am Shiite and those Taliban are Sunni, I think I may just want to fuck-up the American's imperial adventures on my borders my helping those Talibs.

I would not be surprised if this were the case.

28. Yet he says in other reports "Iran has assisted the Afghan government in fighting the insurgents"
AP: NATO general in Afghanistan: Taliban train in Iran
Sun May 30, 11:19 am ET

...Gen. Stanley McChrystal told reporters in the Afghan capital that Iran — Afghanistan's western neighbor — has generally assisted the Afghan government in fighting the insurgent group.

29. Yup. Bringing Iran into this is bullshit.
But, of course, that's our next target. And that's part of the reason for the insane military hardware build-up: the US may get to use all those F35s that are inappropriate for COIN wars but would be great for a massive air assault on Iran.
Hmmmm.

30. He's careful not to mention the Iranian govt, knowing 99% of readers will assume it is the govt
He uses the passive voice and other clever wording to avoid accusing the govt.

"...are being trained inside Iran and given weapons"

"The training...occurs inside Iran with fighters moving inside Iran,"

"The weapons that we have received come from Iran into Afghanistan."

there had been a significant shipment of Iranian arms to fighters

34. Remember "Shock and Awe"?
It was all about air power in the beginning. Bitch of it was that Iraq didn't roll over...they still have an 'insurgency' going.
According to 'GlobalFirepower.com, Iran ranks around 18th in 'military strength' behind such powers as Brazil, Turkey and Italy. I've seen estimates of their 'air force' as being comprised of between 80 and 300 serviceable aircraft. Ouch! Such an air force!
And, of course, if you don't see a need for an air war, why the hell are we spending SO MUCH MONEY for useless hardware?

for a taste of reality... As long as there is narco money to be made and arms sellers willing to trade, the Taliban can and will fight.

That's why the war is not winnable.

36. So we should widen the war, McCrystal?
There will always be adjacent countries that are involved with our wars...how much more do you think we should expand it? To the point where it's the USA against everyone else? At this rate, our endless war against Al Qaeda will destroy our economy...I can't think of a better way to deliver what our enemies want.
