Oil spill may reach Bahamas by weekend

By JASMIN BONIMY ~ Guardian Staff Reporter:

The worst natural disaster to hit the Gulf Coast is likely to reach local coastlines by the weekend, according to Chief Climatological Officer Michael Stubbs, who said a shift in wind patterns is expected to propel the oil slick towards The Bahamas.

In an interview with The Nassau Guardian yesterday Stubbs said that in pervious weeks weather conditions have kept the oil slick contained in the Gulf of Mexico.

"As it stands now the wind is not supporting movement out of the Gulf. It's keeping the oil particles that are floating along the surface in the Gulf of Mexico," said Stubbs.

"However as Friday approaches we see the weather pattern changing and what would happen then is the winds in the area would be flowing clockwise, making it possible for oil floating on the surface to make it to the notorious loop current. So once the particles move into the loop current the chances are for it to reach our area."

6. GOOD QUESTION
That video really rocked me. It's UNACCEPTABLE to think we can stop oil from hitting the shores but won't. I don't buy the excuse that there isn't enough boom. We knew this was coming for WEEKS. Exactly long does it take to manufacture boom? Why hasn't an all-out effort begun?

8. Kicked and recommended with one minor quibble, the loop current isn't notorious, it's natural and
human society has benefited and adapted to it.

On the other hand, the oil gusher is most notorious.

Thanks for the thread, highplainsdem.

10. Bahamian Official: “Chances are” for oil to reach islands after late week change in weather
Source: Nassau Guardian

The Bahamas’ Chief Climatological Officer warned that oil may soon wash ashore on the island chain because of changing weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a Tuesday interview with The Nassau Guardian, Michael Stubbs said, “As Friday approaches we see the weather pattern changing and what would happen then is the winds in the area would be flowing clockwise, making it possible for oil floating on the surface to make it to the notorious loop current. So once the particles move into the loop current the chances are for it to reach our area.”

The Guardian added, “Stubbs, who heads a meteorological task force set up by the Ingraham administration to monitor the oil spill, said once the surface winds shift, oil sediments will most likely reach the Cay Sal Bank, Bimini, and western Grand Bahama – key fishing areas for the marine industry.”

“Some sort of action is necessary at least before the weekend so we can know where to access resources,” said Stubbs.

12. The Internationalisation begins.
Compared with the scale of this catastrophe, in terms of the natural environment which knows no borders, of course, mere nation-states are like dust. Grains of sand.
