(Scott) Brown to vote 'no' on repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell pending Pentagon study
Source: Boston Globe

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Scott Brown will vote against repealing 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' when it comes up for a vote Thursday in the Senate Armed Services Committee, dealing a blow to gay rights advocates who were hoping the freshman Republican would support efforts to permit gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, The Globe's Political Intelligence blog has learned.

Brown's highly anticipated decision, relayed minutes ago by his office, comes after President Obama and Democratic leaders struck a deal Monday night to overcome Pentagon resistance to changing the law before a top level review of how to implement a new policy is completed by Dec. 1.

The deal, outlined in a letter to Congress from the White House Office of Management and Budget, stipulates that any congressional repeal would not go into effect until the Pentagon review is completed.

But Brown says that while he is keeping "an open mind" on future efforts, he believes any vote for repeal should be put off until the Pentagon has time to formulate a plan for implementing any new policy.

1. Is the repeal being formulated in such a way that it will require 60 votes?
Or do we just need to find 51 actual Democrats
to vote for repeal? (Not that that's a certainty,
of course!)

2. 51-vote "Reconciliation" bills have to be budgetary...
Anything else requires 60 votes for cloture.

weak-ass lazy one the Dems put up last time showed she thought it was her seat already. These things effect the entire country, and we need the state to find someone that has proven they work hard to win.

Senator Softcore - perfect! He should lose 55-45 against a good Democratic candidate!

4. Scott Brown is a lame duck that will be easily replaced in 2012
Proof that voting on single issues will NEVER solve any problem

9. And Massachusetts is one of those states that will make a stupid mistake once and only once
and then realize they were idiots and fix what they did wrong.

13. A lot of people at DU were very sure that he would not win in the first place.
I have started taking any political prediction at DU with a grain of salt.

18. +1. His election was also supposed to send a message to "move left."
Somehow blocking DADT passage doesn't seem particularly "left" to me. Perhaps I'm more out of touch than I thought.

7. Not so sure Mass residents would like that. New England has been the best
region in the United States with gay marriage.

11. It would be nice to know what exactly it will be replaced with
Who knows, the Pentagon study may suggest something even more onerous than what we have now.

Can't they fast track the study and then vote on law that they actually know the content of?

17. This was an easy decision for Brown. He has alreadt alienated his
legions with votes to allow bills to procede to a vote, so throwing them a bone was the least he could do. He was a big star on rw radio and sports radio no less, and as someone who listens to these shows (or at least listened in the past), they are gay haters from the word go.
