Indiana Rep. Mark Souder (R) to Resign Amid Affair With Staffer
Edited on Tue May-18-10 08:31 AM by Newsjock
Source: Fox News

Eight-term Rep. Mark Souder will announce his resignation Tuesday after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female staffer who worked in his district office, Fox News has learned.

Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.

Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.

4. So, to be clear, he's not resigning because he had an affair...
...he's resigning because he got caught having an affair...

15. Well that's hardly a fair comparison to make. Apart from a very small minority...
...of pathologically honest people, no man (or woman for that matter) is going to resign from any job, let alone one of public prominence unless caught, over an affair. Certainly not for a stated reason that publically acknowledges said illicit affair as the reason.

Claiming God/belief as a reason not to go is hypocrisy worthy of ridicule. Jeering a man for retreating in shame is no better than putting the boots into a helpless body on the ground.

6. will the demos take advantage of this?

republicans, the bastion of morality, are falling left and right with illicit affairs (occasionally with a women) and if the dems don't hammer them with is continually then they are the spineless wimps i have always suspected them of being.

14. Most excellent news! Souder is one of the worst Rethug "drug worriers" in Congress, ..
... fighting against any sensible federal cannabis policy and for stripping students of their federal school aid for any drug offense.

Good riddance to hypocritical rubbish.

Are there any Rethugligans left who have any semblance of propriety or moral fiber? (Here in Tennessee, you can count them on one hand.)

19. Seriously.
Recent Republican sex scandals in which Republicans promoting traditional sexual morality fail to do so on their own:

2007: Sen. Larry Craig (Idaho) stuck his foot out of his own stall in an airport restroom and got arrested. Craig declined to run for Senate in 2008. Sen. David Vitter (Louisiana) is identified as a client of the prostitute known as the "DC Madam". Vitter was re-elected in 2008.
2008: Rep. Vito Fossella (New York) got arrested for drunk driving and admitted having a child out of wedlock
2009: Sen. John Ensign (Nevada) admitted an affair with a staffer
2010: Rep. Mark Souder (Indiana) ditto'ed Ensign.

It gets worse at the state level.

2009: Gov. Mark Sanford (South Carolina) went missing...because he traveled to Argentina to cheat on his wife...and had to refund the tax money he used to do that. To date, Sanford has not resigned. (Sanford also used to be in the US House of Reps) South Carolina's legislature considered impeaching him, and the SC House passed a resolution censuring him.
2010: State Senator Roy Ashburn (California) was arrested for drunk driving (like Fossella above). Someone else was riding with him. Ashburn later came out of the closet and had to pay a $2,000 fine, serve one day in jail and another at a work program, and three years of probation. Also, State Representative Kevin Garn (Utah) resigned as House Majority Leader in his state after admitting to have spent time in a hot tub with a teenage girl when he was 28; the incident occurred around 1983. Garn paid the woman $150,000 not to discuss the incident.

Also, a few months ago, the Republican National Committee got plenty of guffaws on MSNBC primetime and the left-wing blogosphere after it was revealed that some donor money was used for a night at a strip club.

22. There is ...
Tom Hayhurst is running as the Democratic candidate. He did well against Souder in 2006, so hopefully he can pull it off.
