11. PHOTOS FROM EVENT AND COMMENTS ------>
Edited on Tue May-11-10 11:40 PM by onehandle
My original post was a quick one from my iPhone. Glad I'm home now to show and tell my DU friends about an awesome Democratic night. I waved a sign on a busy street corner this afternoon for hours. Afterwards I met my fellow campaigners at Twains, a brewpub near my home. We had great fun eating and knocking back beers while checking the returns on my iPhone. This is how Jason was keeping up with the numbers. One of us would run up to him and show him on our smartphone. Crazy.

My voice is hoarse from shouting over the crowd and I have my physical tomorrow morning. My doctor will think I am dying. It was worth it!

Rosalynn Carter walks into the pub and straight over to the table where I am sitting with several people. Jason Carter joins her immediately:

Jimmy shows up a few minutes later. I get to meet him, shake his hand (he has a firm and very young grip), and tell him I would vote for him again. He talks proudly to me about his grandson:

President Carter with a cold one:

President Carter, Rosalynn, and Jason:

President Carter and Jason's wife Kate talk as Jason climbs onto a bench:

President Carter, Kate Carter, and Rosalynn look on proudly as Jason makes his victory speech:

State Senator Elect Jason Carter:

I had a great night and met a lot of new Democratic friends.
(and had some damn good beer)

I was told by other campaign workers of how Jimmy hopped up on a wall to make a stump speech for Jason last weekend.

Wow!

And yes. A lot of Secret Service there tonight.

57. Fantastic to see Grandpa Carter looking so happy and proud.
IMO, he is one of the most underrated Presidents in at least the past century.

If we had listened to him, we would have been independent of foreign oil by now, or very close to it.

Negotiated the only peace in the Middle East worth a damn.

Got back the hostages like a grown up, without starting a macho bullshit war and killing thousands of people, too.

Among the many achievements of his post-Presidency: winning a Nobel Prize, the only one every won by a President in his post-Presidency, and breaking with tradition to call out Dummya for the Iraq War (as did President Ford).

And Mrs. Carter--incredible woman. Was on the Daily Show recently, promoting her latest book. Stewart said she just exudes goodness, something he said he could not say about many people. (He was so tender with her, it was very sweet.)

Perdue is term limited this year and most of the state business is finished for 2010. Perdue can call a "Special Session" but it will be for a limited duration.

I loved my President the peanut farmer. The man who had a plan that would have taken us off the oil tit, the man whose word is solid gold tinged with pure silver.
I voted for President Carter. He could have been much better had the congress worked with him but the rightwing treasonous bastids did to him the same as they did to President Clinton and are doing now to President Obama.

46. No, this was a 'winner take all' special election.
Our former State Senator was appointed Ambassador to Singapore by President Obama.

There were two Democrats, one 'Independent,' and one Libertarian (who left us a robocall accusing his opponents of being 'Socialists who support the extreme Obama agenda) and no Republicans.

I live in the Bluest county in Georgia. Republicans often don't even bother.

Another aristocratic political family has been born.

Hey, but at least they didn't elect a Rockefeller or Bush.

53. The Carters are in no way, shape or form 'aristocratic.'
Jason, his wife and two kids live in a regular neighborhood a few blocks from me.

'After graduating from Duke University, Jason followed in the footsteps of his great-grandmother, Lillian Carter by volunteering for the United States Peace Corps. In a rural South African village where people carried their water from the river and built their houses by hand from sticks and mud, Jason helped local schools recover from decades of neglect under Apartheid. As South Africa began its post-Apartheid struggle, Jason saw first hand the ability of political leadership to transform and inspire an entire community.'

Half?

I'm not knocking him or his family or his policies, I'm just stating that the overall trend of political power being gathered in families is disturbing.

50. My concern is...
...that young Jason is gonna get buried in the mess that is the Georgia Legislature, which is overwhelmingly Republican. When his granddaddy was Governor Democrats still ruled the roost - even if most of 'em were DINOs. Today he's gonna be 'back-benched' and unless we're lucky enough to have the former, Democratic, Governor, Roy Barnes returned to office, he - Jason - along with the rest of the Democrats will just languish in obscurity. Still wish him well since I'm in his District, but am not optimistic...you see this state is doomed because most of 'em have bought into all the lies about Obama, Democrats, Liberals and Progressives, in short, anything and everything that a few of us here still believe in.

52. Was the victory party at Manual's Tavern?
Manuel Maloof (1924 - 2004) was a great American Democrat and owner of Manual's Tavern in Decatur. Many a Democratic victory (and wake) has been observed at Manual's. It certainly looks like Manual's in the photos.

My heartfelt congratulations to Jason Carter and his family. I hope this is the beginning of a turn-around in atavistic Georgia. Next time I'm in Manual's I'll buy a round in honor of the Carters.
