GOP senator joins push to declassify 9/11 report
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/07/30/graham.intel.report/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An influential Republican senator has joined Democrats in pushing for the release of a 28-page section of the congressional report on the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks allegedly dealing with Saudi Arabia's ties to the hijackers.

Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, are gathering signatures on a letter to the president calling for the release of the section, which was almost entirely censored by the administration, citing national security reasons. <snip>

But Wednesday afternoon, two Democratic senators -- Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Dianne Feinstein of California -- said they would not sign the letter because releasing the information could jeopardize an ongoing investigation into foreign involvement in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Both are members of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

1. things just keep getting more strange every day
what do they know that we don't, with all the leaks so far about that d00d in san diego. i'm beginning to think that maybe this whole redaction thing is just scene I of some bizarre play.

i dont know about rockefeller, but feinstein always gave me the impression that she was for transparency.

6. I don't know what this is from Feinstein and Rockefeller
maybe just their initial reactions?

Shelby said on CNN tonight that he wouldn't sign unless Pat Roberts signed first (Shelby's not on the Intel. Cmte. anymore). He was CNN's idea of a balancing act with AZ Sen. Kyl, who insists that * is absolutely right to deny declassification. So unless Pat Roberts is ready to start eating his own, Shelby ain't either.

This is a congressional report right? Why does the executive branch have sole control over what gets declassifed? What happened to checks and balances?

On edit...YOOOHOOO----------> I'm out of the 700 club!!!

11. They don't have sole control
But the procedure for the senate forcing declassification over the president's wishes has never been used before.

The CNN article seems to have already been removed, but the info is here

13. It's been heavily edited
I thought the specifics about the committee and senate vote procedure were taken out, but they are down at the end now in the last few paragraphs.

4. No way NO WAY!
I can't believe this. I know Sam and this is not anything I would expect from him. Something smells here. I constantly write to the guy and I never get back anything but the GOP line. I know this man personally and I won't believe this until I see it.

10. "The entire 28 pages to be declassified,
entirely "REDACTED."

Repugs know they have nothing to fear. It will come out like the Cheney energy report- REDACTED.
