Democrats Drawing Bead on (Katherine) Harris' House Seat
SARASOTA - Democrats running against U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris are attracting attention from party leaders and political interest groups that mostly stayed out of the 2002 campaign.

Christine Jennings, who announced her candidacy this week, is a former banker capable of raising the kind of money it will take to compete against Harris, a Sarasota Republican who collected $3.3 million in campaign contributions in 2002.

Jan Schneider, a Sarasota lawyer who raised $395,000 in that race and had little help from the party, won 45 percent of the vote in 2002.

It will be a formidable task to defeat Harris, an incumbent who became a household name for her role as Florida's secretary of state in the 2000 presidential election.

Since then, Harris has backed a $20 million federal grant to fix public housing in Sarasota. She has been appointed to the House Financial Services Committee and the House International Relations Committee.

1. The 13th is a pretty safe district, IMO
Miller held the seat for most of the 90's. Harris took the vacant seat when he retired.

Bless her for trying, but it will be quite a chore to topple Harris.
